I don't have any experience with publisher but I hear one job is coming in this week...

But....

I know one thing....

Pitstop paid for itself in about the first month we got it...since that time it has probobly paid for itself 100 times over! Some jobs we get on a regular basis would not at all be possible without it. Yeah, it's that good.

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money and I'd have to say in the past 5 years, of anything we have purchased to aid us in our workflow...Pitstop is miles ahead of anything else. If you could only get your penny pinching "superiors" to understand this Sparky....

Sparky,

I found that Publisher 2002 doesn't work well on Windows 2000.

We were running Pub02 on WinXP when the owner of the company decided to claim the computer for the front office. We were told to load Publisher on the rip computer (that was running Win2000.) ...he gave us back the WinXP computer after it took us three days to run a simple 4-color job!

Maybe your boss has a cd of WinXP software kicking around?

Jan

Sparky I know this is a little late but here's my two cents.

Sounds like your handling the kind of publisher files I used to have to all the time and like you I had an employer who didn't want to fork out the cash for pitstop. You know how those mom and pop shops can be.

I wouldn't do any kind of editing or color changes in publisher. I would distill a pdf file from a .prn file which I guess is microsoft's version of PostScript. Just print to file.

Then since I wasn't fortunate enough to have pitstop. I would do all my editing in Illustrator. Changing RGB colors to spot colors mostly. Then I would save as .eps and place that .eps file into quark. Then If I needed to place any kind of graphic into the document that wasn't a problem.

I guess to put a long story short don't try to do any kind of color changes or color separations with publisher.

Hope this helps.

No response is ever too late.

JimT been there done that. Even read an article that mentioned to retro-save the file back to Illustrator 7.0 then reimport it. We've also had issues with P 2003 and trashed that infavor of P 2002.

My mainstay is the Mac, My boss (owner of company) and our CSR manager (Mr. I tried using your ego as a target but it didn't fit on my wall) are both so PC oriented and spout off all day long as to the virtues of Publisher I want to just scream (no offens to those who really do know how to use it) But when ever there's a problem or they can't figure out how to do something they come crying to me. So my best defense is to have the answers and get them off my ass

Some day..................

Sparky - have you tried back-saving the EPS down? I seem to remember that did the trick on a Pub job for me a while back. I think I saved it down to 8, but if that doesn't work go even lower.

Sparky, if its something simple, we try to take Publisher out of the picture entirely.

If there is an .eps file in it, we save the v.10 file back to v.8. (Ive been told sometime in the past, that v.8 was the last "true" .eps there was) Not exactly sure what it means, but I have noticed .eps files that wont work in v.9, v.10, v.cs, will work if I save them back to v.8. (Transparency is another issue entirely though.)

Anyway back to the topic at hand....
We take Publisher out of the picture by creating a .pdf out of Publisher, then we open the .pdf in Illustrator (still on the PC, since its PC fonts after all), convert all type to outlines, and save as a v.8 .eps file which we than take to our Mac, and drop into Quark and proceed with the job as though its a Mac file.

For small/simple jobs its the easiest thing we have figured out. The colors will separate as they are expected to and not however Publisher wants to.

We have also found that Publisher works better for us on an older PC system than on our newer system.
So basically we have 3 working "stations" if you will.
3 Macs workstations, 1 PC workstation, and 1 Publisher workstation.

Hope this help you out in some small way.

OK to put this one to bed!!!!

I have the answer.

1. Create or open existing Publisher document and open the colors dialog in the commercial printing menu.

2. make sure you know the exact name of the spot color in the eps file and create that color in the document.

3. NOW import the eps file into Publisher and damn it........ Publisher now recognizes the spot color in the .eps file and prints the separations.

If you try to define the color after placing the eps it doesn't work, by choosing process + spot in the comercial tools dialog and creating the color BEFORE importing the eps, all is OK. It doesn't matter what version of Illustrator or PUB we tried it on, it worked every time!

We are happy campers...

Thanks everyone for the input
