Variable Data Software - recommendations?

This is my first post - hopefully in the correct forum.

I work with a digital printer that currently uses Fusion Pro for variable data. We have Kodak/Heidelberg (whatever they want to be called this week) Digimaster 9110's and a Nexpress 2100 for color. We've had issues with rip time coming out of Fusion Pro outputting to VDX and PS files alike.

So, I was wondering if anyone has any variable data software they use and would recommend. We'd prefer to keep it in PDF format if at all possible - but are open to changing our workflow a bit if the available options require such a move.

Any ideas are appreciated.

We use PrintShop Mail regularly It's pretty good, and PDF based. RIP times on the DocuSP aren't bad at all. We are outputting "Optimized .ps" - I've tested ppml, but didn't see as big of a difference as I was expecting, so sticking with PrintShop Mail for now. 90% of our VD is text only and about 10% variable images.

I've demoed XMPIE's uDirect, it's very nice. It's a plug-in for INDD. Big $$ tho.
There are tons of apps for VD now. You have a lot to choice from.
Hope this helps.
