numbering raffle tickets
Does anyone have a good way to number raffle tickets in any of the standard layout programs. My boss is telling me that people are numbering raffle tickets and other jobs in those programs for outputing on a copymachine and i cant seem to find a way to do it properly in any of the standard layout programs.

They are probably doing some sort of data merge in "those programs" :-)

Hey there!
You can do it by starting off in excel. Create a continually numbered database (real easy, no mass typing necessary), save it as a .txt. Then using Quark you can create linked text boxes on a master page, starting with the automatic text box. Get text on the first box on page 1 and the .txt will flow into all of the boxes creating pages as it goes.
If you need more instruction just shout.!

CorelDraw can do some merge and numbering. I have seen a tutorial (in Spanish, sorry) for that:
http://www.batallasgraficas.com/foro...opic.php?t=406 (thread name: "Tarjetas de Presentaci?n, Imprimir en Fusi?n y un Macro")
I don't know if Corel falls inside the category of "standard layout programs". I think the debate is still open

Try Quark 6.5
In the master pages create a text box and press command+3 and it will give you "<#>" in it.
Then you can type any number in front of it "1234<#>" and the last digit will be consecutive depending on your page count.
hope this helps ya!!!

We do it here all the time in Adobe InDesign. First you need to create your numbers in Excel. Make sure you give headings to each column depending on how many up on a sheet you are planning on numbering. (reply if you don't understand that part) Then you must save that as a .csv file. Next open your layout in InDesign and put text fields where you prefer your numbers to be. Then choose "Data Merge" under the "Window" menu. Click on the arrow in that pallet and choose merge data. Here you will point it to your .csv file that you created. From here it will show you all your column headings. You need to assign those to your text fieldson you layout. Once that is done, have it finish the merge. It will create how ever many pages is required to complete the merge. Sounds difficult but it's simple. You end up building a nice data base of frequently used numbers such as "1-500", "1-1000", etc.. Hope this helps

I do it regularly using Acrobat 6 or 7, Quite Imposing Plus and PitStop. This is a great technique for short runs of tickets (less than 5000).
1. Create the ticket w/o numbers and impose it 8-up (or whatever the job requires). Then, make a PDF and call it background.pdf.
2. Create a new document in Acrobat (I believe this requires PitStop) that is the size of a single ticket and is as many pages as you need tickets.
3. Use the "Stick on Page Numbers" function in Quite Imposing to add your numbers. Repeat to add numbers to the stub. (If you have the new Quite Imposing 2, your numbers can have leading zeroes - just enter 0001 as the first number.)
4. Use the "Shuffle Pages for Imposing" function in Quite Imposing using the Single-Sided Cut Stacks scheme.
5. Use "N-Up Pages" in Quite Imposing to set the numbered pages multiple up.
6. Use Acrobat's "Add Watermark & Background" function to merge in the background.pdf you created in step 1.
It seems like a lot of steps, but it can be done very quickly once you get the hang of it. You can number 1,000 tickets in about 5 minutes on a fast machine.
Beware of large quantities as the time it takes for the "Shuffle Pages" function seems to increase exponentially.

I got that far with Quark linking tickets and master pages etc up to 8 up (i dont' think I could explain it too well but to say I made a master manually typing in 001 to 1000 etc. both for 2 numbers on a ticket and 1....I know, it's kinda insane but I had a few hours to kill one day......
Now my boss wants me to set them up in such a way that when they cut them they come out stacked in order. Like 8 up 4 up whatever. I mean in 1 column it goes from 1 to 100 for example then the next 101 to 200 and so on. I gave up on the idea cause I'm just a simple guy from Canada.
But IT BUGS ME THAT I CAN"T FIGURE IT OUT DAMNIT!!!!!!!

pspdfppd,
See my post above. The method I outlined there will get you what you want. This is called a "Cut Stacks" imposition. Problem is, you need PitStop and Quite Imposing Plus to do it. Failing that, I could give you another method using Preps.

Adam,
We have InPosition which is a lot like preps I suppose and I somehow guessed the answer would be something to do with that but can't get my little brain around it somehow.......
