i am very new to scripting. How would i use that script? I do this often and it would help me out a lot if I could get it to work

eps scripting

This is a built-in script. It's cake! All you do is (with quark open) go to the menu's at top, the one with an icon are the built-in scripts. Go to "saving" and it does the rest for you. It's saved my butt a few times!!! Rock On!!!

Numbering

By the way, I would just like to say that you guys that figured out how to numbering using data merge or whatever, you are bad-ass! Very cool stuff.

we use Excel to create the numbering, import it as the varible in InDesign, and then Freeform it on a Fiery RIP to link up with the master

yeah thats what i do. i actually had a job for a catalog of headlights with 1000 pictures. I just had the customer supply a .csv file with the text info and a field with the graphics file name and did a datamerge and place all the pics in like 2 minutes. I then set up my master pages and such. It was great to do a simple catalog that quick.

Okay, I'm kind of a bonehead making up 001 to 1000 manually or whatever for a few years for the cheap and dirty numbering system but just lately I've found another way. Bear with me, this is very "low-tech" but it works for the simple tickets we usually get around these parts.

You create your master page in Quark or InDesign.....whatever...then you copy all your ticket elements on master page A to start. (I know, if you have colored tickets and are making a lot there will be a huge file created but like I said, this is "low-tech".) Anyway, on master page A you enter 00x (x is the symbol for auto numbering depending on what app you're using)....that works up till 009 ok. You you copy all your page elements onto a new master...master B and enter 0X. You insert 89 new pages and that will take you up to 99. Caring on with our saga, you do the same for master pageC and do a X for the auto numbering. That will take you up till whatever after you insert the pages based on C.

I'm not sure If i've explained it right but it works really well even if you have 2 numbers on a ticket or 1. If we get a ticket that is going to create a huge MB file that our docutech can't handle (it happened a couple of times, once a 1000 ticket file that was 4/4 came in at 2 GB) then we just print them and number them manually. But for most of the simple tickets we create, this method works fine.

Acrobat Pro/Std. numbering..easy????!

ACROBAT pro/std.
The method that I have come up with to number/double number.

Create PDF file with appropiate number of pages(10 or 100are easiest to work with.)

1. Create text box (label START) place in the desired position of number. (format as number)Type in "1"(helps make sure everthing ok when creating other text boxes.)Copy and paste if double number.

2.Create Text boxes with numbers,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,20,30, label them +1,+2, +3, +4, +5,etc. Make them hidden/does not print, locked.

3. Create text box for the next number (usually on the next page in the same position). Calculate -text box- value is the sum (+) of the following fields. "Start", +1.
Continue this for the rest of the numbers. -"Start", +2- "Start", +3 "Start" +4 "Start, +5 etc.....(hint Start, +20, +30 = 51 if numbering begins with 1)
When all number text boxes have been created enter beginning number into "start" text box. All numbers should appear in consecutive order (1 -10 if 10 pages 1-up.1-100 if 100 pages 1 up).(might have to print in reverse order depending on machine)
Placement on muliple up #s should match the job design/bindery dept wishes.
This method will number jobs in sets of 10 or 100.
Print in sets of 10 or 100 changeing "start" number appropiately.(hint -enter 11 into "Start" box for next set for 10 pages 1-up).

You can be place onto existing PDF file to be printed in one pass, or printed as a separate run on to preprinted job.
You can "start" with any number 1, 125, 54321001, etc and numbering should work.

This takes a little time to set up but once completed it is possible to rearrange for other jobs. I have Number set-ups for 1-up(Purchase orders), 4-up(double # tickets), 8-up(Double # raffle tickets). 3 part NCR-(hint- Copy and paste each text box to get 3 of the same number on different pages).These set-ups cover almost every numbering job we get.
