The Simple Things

rave i guess? not seen one here before, wasnt sure what one looks like

At the end is a simple email I got from the production manager...moments before I turned into a blurr running for the door. Did have me jumpin from job to job all day, but I am used to that and do it without any whining. It took less than a minute to type this up and make me feel appreciated.

why is that so tough for most leaders to do, just on ocassion? I dont ever expect to have my ass kissed for anything I do for a paycheck, but it is the simple things that can make a job not so horrible.

"Hey,
Thanks for letting me jerk you around today. Things got a little crazy!!!!!

Everyone over on this side is leaving at 3:30 if you want to leave."

this is a secret message meaning you're screwed because everyone has left the building and you have no one to ask for help or what the hell they meant when they scribbled that cryptic note on the job ticket that you can't read and the job is due on press asap!

Positive reinforcement is one of the most important managing tools, and yet it is so rare.

In my environment, prepress leaving early would be like a surgeon leaving half-way through a kidney transplant!

I, myself, am a young manager. I am a department head at age 26. I cut and pasted part of this post to my manager, the president of the company, as a reminder of how important positive reinforcement really is.
Right now, I feel I am young enough and close enough to the actual work to remember these sorts of things. I only hope that as I grow old (not up), that I will continue to value the worker.
Thanks for the post - it's good to know that the little things make differences in people's lives.

Well it didn't make a difference in my life, it just showed me a mindset that didn't mind spending 60 seconds just to let me me know I was helpful to them today. I do what I do for my paycheck, not approval. The goody of that email was that it made me feel like part of a team, not as part of the payroll.

lol @ David's comment...nah, the "other side" is the main production side. I work on the "geeky" side. Big place, automation, blah blah blah.....the production manager can tell me if I can go home early, but isn't my first boss.
