The flip side to this is that whatever you can do, you are either generating more work or securing future work. It's a ball ache for sure, but that's prepress

no, thats not it, it just seemed a bit dramatic, thats all.
i reread the original post and my reply, and i stand by what i said - however, it is a rant and rave topic, so perhaps i should have let it go.
to each, his or her own.
good luck with your crusade.

i agree, don't train customers or designers. but than again, i always do it. just trying to be nice, share knowledge, but unfortunally it always gets back to me.
and appart from that, how often did a boss tell me, can you train him quick in photoshop this morning while we are waiting for a job to come in, so she/he can help out when your not here or busy? so all my knowledge i collected from years of dotetching, drum-scanning, colour management, print process, all technics in photoshop you find out and practice day in day out since PS 2.0, all that knowledge fits into one morning.
however, i freelance now more and more often as digital artworker (sounds better than mac operator) in design studios. and i have to answethe whole day questions about programs etc... so that a kind of training too.
I should put on my business card training too, than i can say, "well i offer to teach you for a good hourly rate"
good topic

We have this designer from the client we had, that always go to us and adjust things. When I teached him for the many days he came in. I just heard that he works for a printing company at the prepress department. He said he enjoys being in Pre-press.
See even designers love our job. Hehehe

we have a neighboring company whose owner's daughter is going to design school. she comes in almost every other day with photoshop questions and the CSR/Counter person keeps sending her directly back to my office, unannouced, laptop in tow. I keep my answers to a minimum - told the owner about it today and it is being put to a stop as of today, since the CSR/Counter rep ISN'T charging for my time. And since my increases are based on what my department makes - he deemed it unfair to me.
sometimes my boss/owner is too cool!
((sometimes))

See. I think it is about time we charge them for everybit of knowledge we give them. Come to think of it, why don't I just get a loan from a bank and create a school for pre-press dummy's. Specialy here in our country there are so many stubborn designers who thinks they know everything.
