Is it time for me to quit?

SETTING- WideFormatSweatShop run by WhiteMormenMenWhoGolfTogether

ME- SolitaryNightshiftProductionGirlwithPurpleHair and cant get fired

So about 9 months ago when i started working for this place, i recieved NO training.. but really an untrained monkey can figure this stuff out. And was seated next to the "Designer" the only designer.. we all know about designers. Well this guy has a massive chip on his shoulder, 1 from being demoted from DesignOR with an office to sitting at the 4 ways with the rest of us peasant production artists, and 2 from having a domineering wife that likes to call him incessantly and yell so loud in the phone that we all know every detail of his apparently inadequate anatomy. So MR.NotWearingThePants - Permascowl- WillGoPostalOneDay- automatically hates me. Im told to direct any questions to him. "Hey uh Frank, can you tell me where the templates are?"
(series of very loud dramatic huffing and muttered curses) "CHECK THE SERVER, if you cant find that then maybe you should quit! GOD can't we hire people who aren't MORONS?!"

so my response is "Thanks Frank.. but please dont hate me because i love you"

WORLD WAR THREE

In case anyone is wondering, WW3 looks like this.
MR.NoPants + HR + Mormons/NightshiftGoth = BOOM

I got read the riot act FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT and a single final written warning.. i didnt quit because the hours are good. and NoPants has ceased to exist to me, for 8 months he hasnt even come near me or looked me in the eye.

until yesterday.

lastweek someone quit and passed down to me a footrest for we two in high desks.. well the next morning NoPants had appropritated it.. Hey no problem right ill steal it back for the night and he can use it during the day. I get an email from the Lead telling me to "respect other peoples property". About 5 minutes later Pants stands up next to me and starts SCREAMING.. and when i say screaming i mean the scary type of oh shit is he going to hit me screaming. "FUCK YOU, STAY AWAY FROM MY DESK, ITS NOT YOUR FUCKING PROPERTY, DO YOU FUCKING HEAR ME, EVERYBODY HATES YOU, GO FUCK YOURSELF"

hes stuttering hes so mad. so i look him dead in the eye and calmly say "I dont appreciate you screaming at me if youd like to express something i suggest we go to HR" he looses his goddamn mind. stands right over my chair and is thrusting his finger about 2 inches in front of my face "DONT YOU FUCKING LOOK AT ME FUCK YOU DONT TALK TO ME DO YOU HEAR ME FUCK YOU"

by now the entire company has drifted over to the department and nobody says a word. including his supervisor. so i get up and leave. my supervisor is pissed and telling the other supervisor to fire him and they enmass go to HR and the General Managers office. Just now the other supervisormormon tells me "he shouldnt have talked to you that way but apparently months ago you insulted him, but still we reprimanded him but no we didnt write him up and were going to give him an office again away from you, and by the way if you want to avoid this sort of thing maybe you should avoid him and try to learn to get along with the day crew"

so... should i quit?

If you can quit (money and that stuff), quit. Period.

If you aren't in a position to quit, seriously reconsider your position. This stuff
comes from the tone set at the top of the ladder (ie they didn't can Capt. Furious).
It will not get better.

Good luck!

Life is truly short. Know that you're going to quit and find another job. Once you convince yourself that this hole is temporary you'll be able to bare the time it'll take to find another job. When you find that job tell the new company that you'll need to give a two week notice. Then go to your old job give them a one day notice and take 2 weeks off and have fun. Live your life. Shit jobs like that give the business a bad rep.

His behaviour is completely unacceptable in any scenario. He has serious emotional issues and vented his frustration directly at you.

In every situation like this you should keep a detailed diary of events and what was said by both parties. This will be your evidence.

In my experience though in the long run if you are unhappy at work then there is only one course of action. Get a good reference and get a better job.

You need to send a certified letter to your HR department stating that due to the circumstances you feel that you are experiencing mental and physical abuse from this person. While this should have been done immediately after the incident you need to put it on record. Now I know what you're going to say.....I haven't been physically abused...... but remember when he was yelling at you and in doing so spit hit you......... You are being setup as you already have strikes against you with a written warning. While we all want to be a smartass and tell assholes to fuck off, unfortunately in the corporate world this comes back to bite you in the ass. There are many ways to tell someone to go screw themselves without actually saying it. Either way you have an excellent case - that being said prepare yourself for another job as your management has made it quiet clear that they do not value you as an employee and your time with this firm is without a doubt on borrowed time. They are looking for their right time to do it. I would get in touch with the appropriate state agencies and proceed from there.

"he shouldnt have talked to you that way but apparently months ago you insulted him, but still we reprimanded him but no we didnt write him up and were going to give him an office again away from you, and by the way if you want to avoid this sort of thing maybe you should avoid him and try to learn to get along with the day crew"

This is an idiot statement which, as I said above, is a clear indicator of their intentions. If what you said is true -- there are always 3 sides to every story -- stand up for yourself and your rights - but dont be an ass about it in the process. Your immediate response to this when it was told to you was "why am I being treated different with regards to company policy than that employee" now you have a discrimination issue along with the current situation. While I don't advocate bullshit actions - today everyone is to quick to use that discrimination avenue, and in doing so, screws it up for legitimate issues, you are being railroaded and a Firm should be held responsible for it. Downside is that even though you will win this battle you will lose the war at the firm. No great loss based on what you have described.

Ok now flip side:

To me this would appear as you also have a chip on your shoulder - your characterization of the firm and the demeaning description of your job brings a simple question to mind- why did you take the position? I'm sure the company didn't change overnight after you were hired.... be prepared to defend yourself as these statements indicate that there probably is more to the story than what was posted. The old saying is so so true -- There are 3 sides to every story - your side, their side and the truth.

Good Luck with it.

Quote right Jim, there is only perception and reality. Rarely do they equal one another. However Miztrezzz only has her perception. Despite your previous comments being true, the situation to deal with is very real to the person concerned. I have a similar situation myself.

Miztrezzz, you should state your feelings to HR in writing and start looking for another job. However if you have problems of your own, you will only succeed in taking them with you.

Hope it all works out good for you

Whenever I've had personal issues with people and I feel I'm being treated unfairly by HR or the bosses, I have always documented situations in writing and forwarded them to the appropriate personnel.

Date - Person A used foul language and threatened to kill me.
Date - Person A threw an object.

Just document it. If they fire you, you have records. In today's digital age, if you send an email documenting it, then printing it out for your records, you have a little bit of ammo in case you have to file a lawsuit.

I'm in a pretty good personal situation here. Like the people, they like me, but I came here from a place where I just hated the supervisor.

It sucks too much and life is too short to work with shitty coworkers.

My last bit of advice is... give your enemies enough rope and they will eventually hang themselves. Let him go postal and if he still continues to treat you like crap, resort to mental tricks and mess with his files across the network, delted his ripped files when he's not looking, throw away his lunch, all kinds of stuff.

Of course I'm just rambling and would never advocate creating problems at work.

I used to work with this one lady who was also a designer (hmm bit of a trend here) She was always flying off the handle at everyone so we took a dead mouse and stuck it in her desk drawer where she kept her pens. Next day she reaches down for a pen and instead grabs a fucking dead mouse by the face. Hardy Har Har. She shut up for a few days. (That's a true story)

The point is get the hell out of there, but go with some style.

Always go with style. Maybe take a two week vacation and come back and quit or wait for it to get real busy.

Make sure you piss in someone's soup before you leave.

(not literally)
