Man, that really pisses them off!
One of my co-workers used a similar argument only theirs went:

"I can't stay late tonight."
"Why?"
"I have to water my parents lawn."

This was his standard answer all spring and summer.

we had one that used the:
"I can't work, I have family in town."

of course, we all knew that his family lived in town, but he made it sound like to the boss they were coming to visit!

One of my favorite sayings when you get a crappy job and you inform the CSR / sales about the problems and they ask you to fix it is "You can't fix STUPID!"

Now this is a bit off the topic of the thread, but...

I worked as a CSR/estimator for several years and would get endless phonecalls from various salespeople/solicitors always asking "May I speak to the person who is in charge of such & such"

Now on days when I was feeling "nice" and didn't just hang up on them, I would play the Larry Conrad game. Larry would end up being the guy who handles our copy supplies, our telephone account, the person to make business decisions about yellow pages advertising, etc. But the funny thing is, Larry just never seemed to be in! Even when the same telemarketers would keep calling back asking for Larry, I had to inform them that sadly he was out ill, on vacation, whatever. It just amused me after a while to have people asking for a person that didn't even exist.

I can't play the Larry Conrad game at this job because the shop owner's name is ? you guessed it ? Larry.

Mind you, this was in the days before I had an internet connection at work. Had to entertain ourselves somehow.

I've played the Larry Conrad game quite a bit, but with Joe Simpson or Frank Crawford.

First off... this post was a genius one to start

I get a few calls a day at least with so and so looking to speak with the owner of the business, regarding an important call about his so and so account (which doesnt exist of course) My line is he's on vacation until next month. Even the owner himself tells these people this. Then they ask if there is someone else who can make financial decisions for the business, I should tell them that our bindery guy would be happy to help them and then just hang up on them.

Then when they call back and say we got disconnected, so nope it was intentional

These are coming in faster than I can read them.

I can only read one mind a day and my wife expects it to be hers.

When CSR gives us a completly unrealistic demand...
"You guys really need to stop doing drugs over there in your department on company time!"
