things cant ever go smoothly.

I am growing very tired of jobs never going smoothly. I am ALMOST sorry I EVER said I love this shit. If I get one problem solved, I then have ten others. I also get real sick of constantly having to watch the assholes who like to get in and use other peoples comps.. Anyone got any suggetions for how to know what files should be on a PC and what files should not??.. there's only about 103,334 files that could or couldnt be wrongfully placed.

This morning I found, what looks like, someone attempting to use my PrepPC for their own personal ftp  very suspicious files... but like I said how do you truly know unless you memorize exactly what files XP is supposed to have, and where. ..and EFI ColorproofXF and the other few programs running on that workstation.

It just gets old. :x :x

...is their a continuing education class that I could take that would help me with this technical bullshit. I just like to make my pictures look pretty in Publisher. no seriously though. I am a "use the software" kinda guy, and am seeing that the tech stuff is highly complicated and I need to get a grasp and quick...

</rant>  its been a rough morning already thanks for listening.

I DO NOT want to just get used to it... I want to put a stop to being hacked. I want to make a work system that runs smoothly, regardless of how fked up a file is when it comes in. :x

...and yes I do feel better after venting but it doesnt change the way I WANT things to be.

Thanks.

So what exactly are the suspect files. Does the PC have an FTP server that is accessible to the outside world? If so do you allow anonymous logins? If you mean it's someone internally doing the hacking there are a number of ways to keep them out. Don't give them the account passwords and logoff when you aren't using it.

you would never be able to compile a list of what files should be there on a machine due to the fact that a new on is created almost every day...

do you not have your FTP secured? I know for ours i look at it once or twice a day and if there is anything suspicious I download it and then take it off of our site.

Sorry to be of no Help but that's the way that Win Blows...

I find random .dat files and random .inf files, in places like my documents, or even directly on C: (ie. "x" "z" literally just named with a letter like that ...and they dont appear to be legitimate)

this morning their was several folders in "my documents" labeled with some dudes name and ftp (ie. John Smith ftp) and in that folder were 3 folders (Music, Video, and Public) the "public" folder had several .exe files in it that I did not put there.

I found all this because I went to my network places and saw that there was a strange connection from the internet and an IP address... so I started looking through everything... I have deleted all of it and it hasnt come back even after reboot, but that doesnt mean it wont...

I guess firewall and antivirus IS NOT ENOUGH. :x

Go here and enter the IP adadress and it will give you the location that it originates from. That is a start to solve the puzzle.

I deleted it though and cant remember what that IP was.

I bookmarked your link though and if it happens again.. thanks Joe.

I am trying to get some jobs worked through here(wish I had _maberry's color correcting team over HERE, been trying to get some color right this morning and it is driving me nuts. 156 proofs later... "oh but could you just take 2 points of yellow out" LISTEN LADY, I just added 2 points of yellow because you asked... sarcasm of course, its not QUITE that bad) so I havent been able to focus on the PC, it is ONLY used for my ColorProofXF, and so I'll get to it later... but thanks for the advice and link.. Im slowly getting back to my normal ZEN. slowly... :?

Thats not so hard.. start with a list of your problems.

What are your first few steps to each and every job? You could fix a lot of "file problems" faster and easier the sooner you find them..
I guess it depends on what your priorities are for fixN'.

...thanks _vee. the thing is my being ALL self taught, I dont have the benefit of conventional wisdom/experience of what is "best practices". I have lots of "pros" to getting into the business the way I have, not having someone to learn from just happens to be a huge "con". I dont have a standard "method" of finding problems early on. Everything is just looked over by me as it comes in, almost always with Acrobat and Pitstop(the few native files I get, Im fine with).. Poor execution on my part, but I havent had any "mentors" so to speak, to show me what is the best way to set up a "net" to "catch all".... giving away a little too much ignorance here, but I dont care, I do great, but I dont catch all. I, unfortunately, have this strong desire to be, cough cough, perfect. I KNOW it is unattainable, but I feel like quality could be better. I dont want to get into bad habits of not being concerned with quality.. (like my production manager) :? ... "oh its just direct mail, people throw that shit away anyway".. YEA, BUT SOMEONE PAID ALOT OF $$ FOR THE PRINT & DESIGN.. anyhoot.. I guess that's why Im sort of in "limbo" about going to find a job in a "real" printhouse(like Williamson)... I dont feel I should start at the bottom, but I dont feel I'll get the same money anywhere else. I guess it's all what you make of it. Im just glad it's friday again. See you in the lounge for a brew?.. 8)
