Listen to chris, I tried this after reading a PPF forum on this topic and it works great. I keep suitcase around and use it to load fonts on occasion to isolate an orphan font or to get a WYSIWYG preview on a font, but I now use the system folder method almost exclusively.

AMEN CR
There is no need for a font management software package with OSX. I use the exact same method myself except I place the User Font folder in my sidebar so that it is always handy no matter what window I have open.
The only Font program I run is Font DoctorX and I only use it to clean up my fonts and create an alpphebitized font folder which I never add to or delete from (Only copy these fonts as needed). These fonts are only used when we have a problem with Customer fonts that they cannot resolve of if we create design pieces in house.

Suitcase Problem
I have a problem also with Suitcase. After startup, I load some fonts then whenever after that, it stalls for 1 minutes when I load another font. IT DRIVES ME MAD!!!!!!
Any help would be appreciated. I have done the obvious re-install, remove all fonts from the systems (only kept the necc. ones). Checked for corrupt fonts, etc....

Try trashing the files
~ / Library / Preferences / com.extensis.Suitcase.plist
and the folder
~ / Library / Preferences / Suitcase Preferences
Obviously quit Suitcase first and then tras 'em. I use X1 all the time and encouner few difficulties, but I have a freind of mine in another company who describes it as Crashity, Crash, Crash, McCrash!
I went over to investigate and couldn't cure the problem until I started deleing cache files...
Try Panther cache cleaner or Tiger cache cleaner depending on your system. A lot lot of people use font finagler as well.
Personally I quite like Fusion, but I've doctored all my fonts. You can see what I think of Fusion at

Hope this helps

jason,
sure...all i have done is created an alias of the following folder, and placed it on my desktop:
HD>users>username (whatever your user name is)>library>fonts
then i copy fonts in and out of that alias on my desktop as needed. no font manager ive used works that easy. when im done with a job, i drag those fonts to the trash, and do a "secure empty trash". this gets rid of them, and then i drag in fonts for the next job.
again, im speaking only from my personal experience here, but ALL of my font issues vanished. maybe others have had issues that i dont know about, but my shop was riddled with font bullshit until we went this route, and now, nothing. and that makes me very happy indeed.
good morning all!

I use suitcase X1 and don't have any probs. I'm curious to know, do the font activate live when u throw them in i.e. you don't have to restart your apps?

ricky,
that is a good question. i have found that quark does NOT need to be restarted. i have found that the CS apps are a little more random in that regard...sometimes they do, sometimes they dont. i always restart my apps when i start a new job, so it is not any issue with me anyway.
oh yeah, i also do my font cache maintenance every morning as well, and doublecheck all of my system font folders to make sure they are in order.
