A Rant (hopefully one of my last)
This is gonna be a long read, so if you don't like it hit the "back" button on your browser now.
Preface: Let's see, the part time guy here told the owner to order film yesterday before he began running 32 pages of full color spreads.
Today: 1st ass chewing - when we told bossman we're outta film. Big surprise, he doesn't remember anyone telling him to order, so prepress is the cause of yet another big headache.
2nd ass chewing - when I come back from lunch to find that the film has arrived, and the p/t guy has re-output a spread that I already have out. I wasn't even here dammit! Boss gets more pissed when I shrug and walk away.
3rd ass chewing (did I mention that it's my birthday - and I really don't need this today) -
Owner very loudly exclaims "Can't this prepress department do just ONE JOB RIGHT?". A doctor's office form that I made changes to with the owners wife standing over me, went to press, and got to bindery before anyone realized that it 2-hole punches at the top, and was run work and tumble, so there was no room for the punch!
Again, I'm thinkin this one really wasn't my fault - boss lets out a very audible growl as I walk away from light table.
4th ass chewing (it's definitely one of those days) - Type default to courier. Yes, this one is indeed MY FAULT! (even though I didn't have hard copy, and just picked up where p/t dude left off - I still should've caught it). Job had to be yanked off the press.
Haven't seen the owner for a while. Another big job came back from a die place with foil logos all off center. If his head didn't explode over that one, whatever goes wrong next will probably send him over the edge.
Anyway, my escape from the world of prepress may well be excellerated with all this crap going on. Thanks for letting me vent!

Hey, that's why he's The Boss and we are merely lowly monkies. He makes the big money to stress, let him stew for a while!

Always ripping on the monkeys. Sheesh!
Duck, that should put the nail in the coffin for you needing to get the hell outta there.
It's almost time to go. Have a beer on me.

what an ahole
find a new boss i say
i never went through a single asschewing like that. things work better when the boss/prod. manager comes shows how the job is wrong figures out where what went wrong, you figure out a way to prevent it from happening again (if somebody slips up, firmly remind them the point is to profit not to reprint.)
i have been in that film situation, somebody getting angry and yelling does no good impose the jobs get them ready for output and get the film as soon as you can then start printing film.
"Can't this prepress department do just ONE JOB RIGHT?"
I probably would have blown my lid at this point, we prepress ops are the fire dept, police dept, surgeon and 911 call center and public transportation all wrapped up in a ball. we save the bosses, customers, and sales reps asses all the time!
to end on a positve note:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
i'd buy you a beer or in the case of your day maybe a whole case if i were old enough haha

Nice way to spend the birthday (I hope the rest is happy for you).
If only we could say "Is there anything my manager/boss/owner can do
right?". That's a POS thing to lay on an employee, duck. A good manager
would know that. Good time to go find one, or to really bail on the prepress
position in that company. It sounds like it's all dropped in the pot and is
steeping at a tepid rate.
On a different note... Go Steelers! Go Seahawks! Make my deams a reality!!

Hey Duck you'll wake up any moment to find a bevy of beauties feeding you grapes and wine, OH wait.... that's my dream, sorry 8O
Anyway, I've had a few days like that myself. Morning starts off with a small problem and the next thing I know is where's my pink slip ops:
For what ever reason, I hung on  (my picture is next to crazy in the dictionary) and I've been able to outlast the owner he sold the business last March and I've been redeeming myself ever since
BTW nice Tar, Bettis is a damn monster 8O

Nobody works well under pressure and if they are under fire. I've worked in situations like that but as I've got experence and confidence in this industry, I'm more likely to tell anyone who tells me off to stick it up their arse.

I say fuck him, he's not worth the cheese under your balls. He obviously has NO CLUE as to what is going on. I deal with this every day. Everybody likes to point fingers.
I also say, the best way to solve any problem is to discuss it, remedy it, learn from it. If you consistnetly make the same mistakes then it's time to let someone go.

Hey thanks for all the responses. It's now Monday, and looks like the owner isn't here today (there are a lot of smiling people for a change). Friday just sucked ass though and I had to vent more than anything.
The last thing I needed was the boss getting pissed about all the little things going wrong around the shop from bad job planning to farmed out jobs coming back wrong, and taking his anger out on prepress. That's probably why I just shrugged and walked away a couple of times, just to let him cool off and be more civil before I give him any attention.
Jalan - you're absolutely right, that did solidify the fact that my time here will be very short. I went out with my broker Saturday to show houses, and will be going with him again next Saturday for more training, then will be starting to take on clients of my own. The pressure's gonna be back on bossman as to whether or not he can be flexible with my hours as I transition into self-employment, or if he's gonna want to piss me off enough to make me walk out and leave him in a real bad situation. Another day like that one might very well be my last.
