Job Offer

I need some advice from all of you that are willing to give it. I have been asked to become an Assistant Manager of the Radio Shack where I'm working part time. It offers $35,000 a year, insurance, other benefits, no more than 40 hours a week (Due to a law suit that Radio Shack lost),vacation. I have been in the printing business for over 26 years and I'm really having a delimna here, any advice would be welcome.

Are you chasing dollars or happiness?

Actually I would be making about the same money, so my guess is happiness, but where are you going to get that as far as work goes?

Then I would go for the one that is the best overall package. That's easy for me to though, I don't have to make the decision. I wanna stay in print, but not here.

Take as much time as you can to make the decision and make it sober

Believe it or not but this is one prepress person that doesn't drink so my decision would be made while I was sober. I am 46 years old, so if I'm to make this move it would be my last one. It's a HUGE, and scary, decision my wife and I would have to make.

Take a hard look at Radio Shack. I have this gut feeling that prepress as we know it is going to change and I hope I'm wrong. As I've mention in earlier treads anything that can be digitized and compressed small enough can be moved or sent anywhere in the world in minutes if not seconds. I think it can be possible in the near future for printers to outsource their prepress anywhere in the world with a lot less effort than it was back in the service bureau days. Read the book "The world is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. Someone mention in PPR that Kinkos is starting to send their prepress to India.

Ask yourself, if money wasnt an issue(you were rich) then what would you do with your time??.. this will lead you to happiness(which is a mindframe, not a destination.) If money would be the same and benefits comparable, and you ARE unhappy in prepress, then the choice should be obvious.

on a side note: it is discouraging to me that you have been at this for 26yrs and make under $40,000/yr. That alone will take me to other avenues, eventually.

GL with the decision. Hope it all works out the way you'd like it to.
We'll miss you if you leave prepress, but then again, we'll envy you if you leave prepress. :P

The thing is, since I work at a University the chances of sending files to India are slim to none, our computer gurus won't take any chances of getting viruses. I'm probably not going to leave here but at my age it's nice to have options.
