We have a VERY artsy client that does a locale visitors guide. It always fun when she comes in to talk about the images in the book. For example, the cover was a shot of a beach and a lake. This is what she wanted us to match:

"You see, there was a storm just over the horizon when I took this picture. I could feel the cooler air blending with the warm summer breeze and the hint of rain in the air. The waves created a irridescents against the white sand. There was a rich blueness to the sky of the early evening, just before the sunset would change it the autumn reds and oranges. I had a great feeling of calm and anticipation. You're just not capturing that in this proof. I don't want to match color in that light booth that's to cold, we need to look at it outside in the natural light."

She does this same routine for all 20-25 to next shots in the book. Of course the book is printed on low grade paper (grade 3 i think).

Yup, she is a unique one. She told us one time that we were not "catching the emotion of the reds." We're still trying to figure out if that means +M and Y or what.

That woman sounds like the customer who was too cool to remove his shades when he came to approve the colour on his proof "they all looked too dark"
How about the expert who when comparing transparancies to proofs would hold them up to the window +C to all

It's always the freaks that want a great looking product while skimping on
stock and cutting corners that kill me. We have an entire region of town where
these people breed and nickle and dime each other to death. Then they come
to the area where I work and think we're rude when they try to play that game
here. A few years ago a lady came in to have some invitations printed up
for her boss. The conversation went something like this:

Cust- Hi I want to do some invitations for my boss. Can you give me some prices?

Me-Sure. What would you like to do?

Cust- I don't know. He like fancy things, and wants it to look really good.

Me- Ok (show her some samples). Anything like these?

Cust- Oh! I like these with the foil and the raised letters (emboss 2 positions)

Me- Ok then. How many do you want to run?

Cust- 40 or 45

Me- Well, we can do that for this price $(insert price for first born here USD)

Cust- REALLY!!?? Don't you think that's kind of expensive?

Me- Well, if you ran 500 it'd only cost you about $10 more...

Cust- Well we only need 45 at the most. If you didn't want my business why
didn't you just say so?

Me- I'd love to do the job for you but that's my price.

Cust- (shuffles around in her purse) What if I use this 15% off coupon?

Me- That expired a year and a half ago, ma'am.

Cust- My other printer will honor his expired coupons, why don't you?

Me- ...

You get the idea...

Cust: why is it when you change the pms to process it dosen't match exactly?

What I heard: If you and I ate a hand full of beans how come our farts don't sound the same?

This is why they don't let me talk to customers....

I send many preliminary proofs to clients via email, as low-resolution screen-quality PDF files and in the body of my email, in bold type with ***asterisks on both sides,*** I inform the client that this is a low-resolution screen proof and that images will actually print sharp on the printing press. And yet, more often than not, I get this:

"The pictures looked all fuzzy...are they going to print that way?"

And my favorite one from the salespeople, as they describe a job that's been printed before:

"It's the same, but different."
