Ok, the set up. Customer has a package, CMYK, 286 and 185.
Customer: "I want the side planel to be 50% of 185, but no screens, it's got to be smooth like the 185 in the logo." (the logo is 100% 185)
Me: "Then we need to add a 7th color, which we can't, we only have 6 color presses."
Customer: "can't you just print that area lighter?, you know put down less ink."
Me: "Sorry, it does work that way, we have to screen it."
Customer: "No, that won't do. Just get a 7 color press then." Hangs up phone.
Me: "Boss, we need to by a 7 color press for <Blanks> 15,000 run gift box."

Mjetz...
I won't try to anticipate your environment
(press, stock, offset, flexo, etc.), but if the
board or sheet is smooth enough, then perhaps
a solution could be to use a higher line screen
for that 50% of PMS 185. At about 240 lpi, at a
normal viewing distance, it is difficult to see the
dot structure (for typical commercial offset).
Doing high-line screens with full tonal range
would require some sort of FM or XM algorithm,
so as not to clip or plug at the extremes.
Regards,

Steve take the serious mask off for a minute. This is "Classic Customer Quotes" the idea is ludicrous to just tell a printer to go out and get a 7 color press.....Get it??

Sparky...
Hmmm...
So, it wasn't a good thing for me to tell
Heidelberg that customers no longer
needed a 12-color press, that 4 over 4
was fine, since Sublima can smoothly
render process and brand colors through
CMYK builds?
Ahhh....

So, I finally get this job out to the pressroom. It was a total disaster just to get it there and I had to give a "heads up" to the people who would work on it because I had no clue if it was going to work or not. Well, customer came by for a press check, signed off, everything was cool. Delivered it Friday. Then, I get a phonecall this afternoon.
Customer: Well, the brochure looks really good, but its wrong.
Me: What's wrong with it?
Customer: The red on the logo is incorrect.
Me: Was it correct at the time you signed off on it?
Customer: No, but I didn't know it was wrong.
Me: What exactly is wrong with it?
Customer: Well, my client wanted the red to match the color of the couch in her office, and its a little on the light side. What do you suggest we do about this?
Me: *in total astonishment* I'll have to get back to you on that one.
So, while waiting for senior management to get back to me with that response, do any of you want to offer some feedback?
William

I'd tell them next time they need to cut out a 6" x 6" swatch of the couch and send with the job. As for this time...sorry unless they want to pay for a re-run.

Re-run job -
deliver job directly to client -
sit job on couch -
add gasoline & ignite!!!
(make sure tell her to have a nice day)
everything should match when its finished burning!
Problem solved!!

Suggest, ever so politely of course, that they set the couch out in direct sunlight until it fades back to match the printed piece THEY APPROVED! :P

I'd get the couch delivered to the pressroom. The machine minders can sit on it @ the delivery end and check their pulls @ the same time!
