OWNERS SUCK

Funny "Owner" story for ya. Yesterday we received an 8pg newsletter from a client to be printed today. The job is a complete from-scratch, design, layout, prepress. We were given word.docs and .jpgs only, with some very brief and confusing instructions. Now here is the AMAZING (or absurd) part of the story. The owner says, and i quote "Let the secretary do it!" I was like "what the fk" She has NEVER done design or prepress in her life. After realizing she wasn't kidding, I said "this is a little complicated." Boss replies "she can learn, just sit with her a while and teach her." So we sit down and the first question is "whats a JPG?" Second "do you think we should use photoshop to lay it out?" Fast forward to the end of the day and the secretary has only completed...well nothing, she ended up actually crying. Of course the outcome of all this is that i had to come in early and design, layout and impose this job. (its on press now, looks good I might add) I have a design design degree and have been doing production for 10 years. Does my "Owner" actually have the nerve to even suggest that my job is that easy or is she just ignorant? I am hoping for the later.

Both. The key is money, however. If I can get my $12 hour assistant to do this monkey work then I'm convensed that anybody can to this job on the cheap!

I actually laughed a little when you said she cried by the end of it. I know I know - that's "wrong" by today's standards. Wah.

Hey, on the upside now the secretary thinks you're a genius!

Been there myself. Thankfully, I now work at a place now that realizes that they aren't paying me for what I actually produce on a daily basis, but what I know and my problem solving skills. My pay is less than the cost of 1 to 8 presses being down or the cost of eating a job that was done wrong.

Sounds like my old shop, except the secretary was the 30+ year old girlfriend of the owner. I have to say though, for 30+ she was quite good looking.

Hey, RaidorFrog, if you're single, and if she is all that, use it to your advantage. Let her cry on your shoulder, comfort her, caress her, cuddle her,.....................................wait a minute, got to end this one, I'll be back in a few minutes, gotta take care of some personal business.
