schedulers and salesmen . . .

Do your schedulars ever stand up to the sales reps and tell them they can't have something in the time they want? It seems to me that, here at least, whenever the salesman says he needs something done by is when it gets a dead line for, weather it's physically doable or not. Then I'm the one that has to break the bad news to them that it's not getting done. I would think with years of experiance a good schedular would be able to rationalize with a salesman that certain things just can't be done that fast.

grrrrr :x

What's a scheduler? (Just kidding.) Other than we don't have one here.

Yesterday afternoon while running 24,000 impressions on the first side, the "salesman" who is also the bosses son, approaches the pressman at approximately 17,000 impressions - I need you to pull this, put the plates on for the other side and run me a few for samples that I can get to the customer by 5:00.

The pressman actually did this. . .so know two sets of plates later, and the time for two setups, he is now actually backing up the job.

Arrrrgggg!

Things like that don't even shock me anymore. I've been in this business too long.........

It seem something like that is at least a weekly occurrence.

Props to all the companys that don't allow that BS to happen. I respect the guy who has balls enough to tell someone "No, this is a business not a playground you ungrateful, snot-nose punk!" I'm ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY - that sh*t don't make NO money.... just someone 'happy'.

I know from present experience as an Estimator/Production Planner that when you tell some customers that it can't be done they say "Fine, I'll go somewhere that can get it done." I'm not standing up for the salesman/CSR by any means because I set here day after day wondering how far they have their head up their ass. Our problem here is we have too many people playing CSR and telling the customer "Yes we can get it done" when there is no way in hell it can get done, plus, they don't even check with the planner, or schedules, before they promise it. I can bitch all I want but it's like talking to the wall. One thing that helps us right now is we just purchased a digital press, HP Indigo 5000, it's great for the small 4/c runs which we have quite a bit of and it gets them done quick with exceptional quality. Believe it or not but I miss Prepress. I only work in there when the one operator, is on vacation. I can remember when we had 7 people in the "Camera Room", now we are down to one.
