Nightmare... Worse than I'd Imagined

Started work today at the shop I left over 2 years ago, went from a nice direct to plate Rampage workflow back to an old PS/M.

OK, now that I've given the backdrop - Oh My God!!!! This place is a mess! I can't find files, the rip is set up to rip/output automatically from a hot folder. No previewing no trapping, print directly out of app - and wait for film with fingers crossed. No wonder they got rid of the other guy.

I hope I can get this crap staightened out soon. This week will be a nightmare - I'll be posting in this forum a lot I'm sure. As for now, my @ss is gonna be busy!

Don't worry about us. We gonna put your @ss working harder with every post answered. Kidding

Hope you configure very well that fully-mega-hiper-ultra automated rip. I know you will.

Go ahead Rocky!

No, I knew from the start that it would be a crappier workflow and that I'd be coming in to a mess left by the other guy. I had it easy at the other shop - everything worked and was organized just the way I like it!

What I was excited about was $5 /hour more I would be making to deal with this crap. Is it worth it? I'll let you know on payday, but for now - I just want to rant about what a @#%!! mess I have to deal with!!!

Oh, and you should know that there is no grass in prepress. It's not greener, just a darker shade of black!

Consider this as an opportunity to shine.......

1. Write down all the problems.
2. Write down all the solutions to the problems - design your workflow
3. Cost up the solutions
4. Calculate the savings to be made from the investment
5. Present to management

You may have to compromise depending on available budget so have alternatives ready.

Allow three months to implement.

Good luck!

Do they have all the old RAMpage stuff? maybe you can just put it all back in place.

start searching boxes of "stuff" for those little white dongles

No, the place I just left was Rampage based. This place is running Scitex PS/M v 6.
The rip is on an old Power Mac 8600 with a whopping 300 Mhz Processor and 128 Mb Ram. Outputting to a Dolev 200 (max film size of 12x18) - so there is a lot of stripping!

If I can get any kind of upgrade here I'll take it! Getting through some of the clutter and getting some jobs out. It sure is a challenge though!

Sometimes ". . . no wonder they got rid of the other guy" translates into "they got tired of listening to the other guy bitching for upgrades".
If the description of the set-up you're working with is what the "other guy" dealt with, he/she might have been doing the best with the time allowed. Finger-crossing might have worked 85% of the time . . .
