I have no patience for people who can't make the grade AND think they know what they are doing. I've had the last two fired and have no hesitation about pulling the trigger on anybody who can't cut it. This job is tough enough with out having to deal with somebody in prepress who isn't a team player with marginal skills.

ok... heres a good one.. we have a client who for some reason never finds it necessary to supply us with a laser of their job... we print one out for them... which is an issue in its own right... but now they insist on us supplying them back a set of seperated lasers... I could understand if they wanted to see all process on one page/ spot on another... but its a huge pain in the ass to print seps out of indesign for large books (32pg+) If i was ever to have something printied i would most definitly make sure that I gave a printed piece that was my ok to use this for reader/position.... I've seen guys spell their own name on a business card wrong than blame us for printing them wrong, without ever sending a hard copy over....

Such people are dangerous - and expensive - to have around. I had to deal with a guy who apparently got his knowlege from the voices in his head. When I tried to discuss postscript or opi with him, he'd insist that he was entitled to his "personal opinion" on how such things worked.

I tried to explain that this is a technology department, not a philosophy department. He didn't get it.

If he couldn't get a job to work, he'd turn off opi and tie up a workstation for hours spooling the job through the workstation, with highres included. That wouldn't work either, but by then he'd have gone home. If we were really lucky he'd gum up the rip with his mess so bad it would crash, taking everyone elses jobs with it. He finally went away - after 5 $#@*& years - to become a "designer."

Pray you're never handed his files to output.

Hey Hotmetal,

Just met a designer just like the one you described. Could it? Nah.....
We're not cloning, are we?

One better, a designer who uses Quark 3.2 Ill 88 clip art has more moeny than they know what to do with (and no clue how to use it) but is so (sorry if I offend anyone) nose in the air (another way of saying arrogant as hell) and my boss says just fix it!

I've seen better Word documents from my 13 year old than this *&^$%$ designer fom soho produces in Quark

How about these...

1. Transparency and spot colors.
2. Sales reps who refuse to try to get information into our customers hands that would help them (and us) save THEM MONEY and US TIME.
3. Had a series of jobs just today from a customer. ALL of them use Akzidenz Grotesk Roman and Light. For each of those jobs, they sent AkzidenzGroteskBE (which isn't the same thing)....apparently they are not familiar with InDesigns 'Package' feature.
4. Sales rep asks (someone who wouldn't know) when they'll see a proof of something.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

The operative word there sparky is SOHO. Would it surprise you that my customer has an address in Manhattan? To make matters worse, they run color lasers and then mark each element with the cmyk build like an old school mechanical! Like I'm gonna change the color builds in their file. Believe it or not some of us do know what we are doing south and west of NYC....when we're not kissing our cousins and drinking corn from a jar!

PS: this is the best thread on the board!
