95 character long filenames...

Distant coworkers have recently tossed any and all naming conventions out the window. I was directed towards a file on the server whose filename was *95* characters long, including the '.indd' ...

Next thing you know I'll be getting filenames written as haikus...

If you think that's a problem, our server will not let us copy file names over a certain number of characters (I think it's around 30).

Sounds nice, but when I get customers disks with ridiculously long file names I have to copy to a desktop, usually change olders from read only to read/write, then change the names to a shortened version, then copy to server - then try to re-link everything that I've renamed.

We have a client that sells fine art. They name thier scans with the artists name, painting name, thier item number, date modified and the .tif extension. They almost need to hire a typesetter just to name files.

Go to the server and copy the files from the disk. You will still have issues with the Mac not recognizing the name and you will have to re-link them as long as you are using appletalk but you can copy them without having to rename them.

Oh...and the limit on the number of characters is 31.

Yeah I'm getting the same problem sometimes when I'm working on OSX and copying files back to os9 for whatever reason. It says " the "so and so" file contains too many characters so I have to go back in osx and shorten the name and relink or whatever. Seems to be the price of doing business these days. I can't remember if the pc server has the same problem but maybe....

If the drive is setup as an NTFS share then the limit is 256 characters.
