Yes, computers have made the graphics/printing industry much more difficult in some respects. I'm in prepress and graphic design at a medium-sized printing company and have seen my fair share of know-it-all clients who assume that a few quark classes and a fine arts degree automatically equals a graphics professional.

However, I'm SOOOO glad to be rid of waxers, glue sticks and coming home with little slivers of paper glued to my person.

Now excuse me whilst I wield my large rubber mallet and go bonk some newbies on the noggins.

<<'And another thing, those computer things, they'll never last you know, I'll bet my life on it'.>>

My brother is in sales. Afew years ago his company gave all their reps laptops for expense reports, product orders, etc. He said, "I don't think I'll ever use it." I answered, "The person who has your territory will. That may or may not be you."

My opinion is if back in the day when you had people that did layout and stripping I would rather just remained a pressman. I got a taste of old school art department and did not enjoy it too much. My boss says we have basically the same problems now we did back then people would send in a paste-up board and it would be wrong so the stripper would have to rebuild the job. Same concept isn't it?

This same boss does not like computers. They call it Paradigm Paralysis.

The computers allows small companys like mine to have the capability that 25 years ago we would never be able to do. Like 4 color separations.

It's a generational thing. Just like the old John Henry Story.
