Wow! I did most of the work shown in composition! I started in the industry in 1974. The shop had 7 linotypes, a Ludlow typecaster for headlines, metal saws, proof press, a furnace for meltdown and reuse of the lead. My general job title was "compositor". In 1978 we created a phototype shop by purchasing an Editwriter 7500. In the late 70's when Kansas City hosted the Republican National Convention, we produced the daily summary of the previous day's minutes in hot metal, working until 2 a.m. (20 hour days) to finish the task.
