Just when I was really bitchin bout my job....

I interviewed for a job last week....pay wasnt bad, around what I make now with a defined pay raise scheme. A very high pressure work environment dealing with ad agencies out of NYC dealing with all Fashion stuff. a few web presses and apparantly a flexo shop down the street. shops both run 24/7. OK

Just put in Prinergy(which I am on now and one of the admins for), and they are still struggling with getting what they want out of it, getting insite going etc(same). OK

The shift was 6pm to 6am, 3-4 nights a week... and oh yeah, every 6 weeks either you are off 7 days straight(yippy!) or you work 7 days straight(postal)...12 hour days, errr nights. not OK lol So, by my calculations, thats...
Home by 6:30am
asleep by 8:00am
awake by 3:00pm
work by 6:00pm
That's a usuable 2 hours each afternoon....

They were union so its a seniority kind of thing with the shift, I told them I would think about it, and sheepishly wished them luck. Day shift(both of them) are filled with their old strippers. I am sure a fine bunch of people, and if they have been there that long they arent leaving anytime soon. I would have to wait for all the night people before me to goto days too.

So the next morning I got up, and smiled as I made my 45 minute commute...it aint so bad anymore, ya know?

oh yeah, HR guy pointed out the 7 days off every 12 weeks...."hey, you can time that with your vacation and take a whole lot of time off"....me thinks, "hey, in that time, I can almost be totally over the damage to my system by working that shift |...| oh snap, the first two weeks back sure will be hell....and oh goody, time for my 7 night straight turn"

Would anyone reading this consider that job?

Actually I worked those same hours for 3 years. It was great overall. and yes I did plane my vacation to coincide with my 7 days off. Remember you also bet 4 days off every week.

Are you single?
Because you will be if you take that job!
I did those exact hours when I was in my early thirties. Had a great time, made plenty of money and had time off to spend it.
Also they would always come around on the third day and ask if I'd work overtime on the fourth day and give me another 12 hours (Half a weeks pay at time and a half)
Now I got the ball and chain , kids, dog, cat, house. That shift ain't happening!!!

stronger man than me bro...I figure I would last a couple of months doing that. The stress plus the hours...This isnt 3-4 12 hour DAYS, its NIGHTS.

so, on your days off you have to keep the same hours right, sleep all day, be awake all night til sun comes up? that is what I was thinking about that schedule. sure I get 3-4 NIGHTS off a week...for what? i could probably dig on 3-4 12 hr days tho.

I guess if I needed a job I would take it. If I wanted out of my current job I'd take it. But I don't and I don't so I wouldn't.

Personally,

I would not take that job. Im young and therefore people expect young people to be able to work non stop and never feel the effects.

I worked 3 years of straight nights (8hr shifts) Wed-Sun. and still do 2 weeks a month nights here.

Social life was non existant as people with day jobs plan there social time on evenings of Fri / Sat / and some Sun.
My relationship with the gf of 3 years suffered to the point where we are no longer together, * not being able to see one another had alot to do with it*

As for working 12 hr night shifts and only nights, and then having 4days off a week or 7 days off, your right, I , like you, need to keep that schedule in order to not mess up my system, so 4 off / 7 nights off overall isnt great if your sleeping your days off away in order to keep in sync.

as Joe said, if i needed a job or hated my current one, I would consider it.
but overall Id pass.

Its funny how that 45min commute seems more tolerable
[I have a 60-90 min commute each way - depending on the shift im working]

Good luck Mikie! I'm a day guy and never could hack the shifting hours. I tried like hell a couple of times but I turned out to be a grouchy bastid to everyone around me, so it wasn't something for me.

Ha! Yep I'm a grouchy bastid anyways but more so doing the graveyard shift. I just could not get used to it. I'd get off of work in the morning, go home and eat and rush to bed which was a mistake.
