We have always had it on, I'll have to check with some operators to see if it causes more problems than not...but I can't recall messing much with it...
from the manual:
Enhanced Overprint
Check Enhanced to ensure more accurate colors in overprinted areas,
because ink amounts are not reduced. Enhanced always uses the
higher ink value in overprinted areas. With Enhanced overprinting,
the result of the overprinting can stay the same or get darker, but it
will never get lighter.
Uncheck Enhanced if you want overprinted objects handled in the
Standard way. The ink values of the front object in overprinted areas
are used, except where the top ink is zero; in that case, it uses the ink
value of the underlying object. Unchecking Enhanced overprinting,
it is possible for the result of the overprinting to be lighter than the
background object.
