Rampage and OSX Server?
We are currently running Rampage 10.2 using a windows 2000 box with a 64 gig drive (yes 64 gigs, ouch)
looking to upgrade our server and am considering picking up an Mactel OS X server box.. does this setup work well with rampage? or should I stick with a windows box for the server?

It (Mac OS X Server) supports SMB. Try hooking up your RAMpage RIP to a share on your workstation and see how it goes before you buy an Xserve.

I had that same idea about using a Mac X server Cory and the RAMpage people talked me out of it. I hate using Windows but am biting the bullet and using it without to much angst. Just putting another drive in your current box may be a solution. My box has three drives in it a 36 gig for the system, and two 140 giggers for RAMPage RSI and Jobs.

Don't use SMB. You'll want to get PCMacLan from Rampage to put on your PCs.
The XServe is a very nice box but you need to make sure that it doesn't come preinstalled with 10.4.9 (which is Incompatible with OS 9 clients, some PCs, and other stuff) and instead wait for when 10.4.10 comes out which you can then update immediately.
You're really better off just getting a new Windows server and not change too radically.

Why would you want PCMacLAN and not SMB? Is it because of Macintosh paths to files?

Yes. A sister shop of ours had this issue. The OS X server gets treated like a UNIX or Apple server. Much like if you were using a UNIX server, you'd have an AFP server on the UNIX machine doing the serving and connecting the Rampage boxes via PC MacLan.
I believe the SMB isn't reliable since the implementation isn't the same as a Windows server with an AFP stack to serve to Macs.

Well AFP writes its paths as Macintosh HD:Users:User1:Public
Windows (SMB/CIFS) is C:\Documents And Settings\User1\ or a network location at \\Server\Share_name\
I guess it makes sense to use AFP to mount the Mac on the OS X box if OPI comments are being written as Macintosh HD:Users....

FWIW, I've been file serving all my stuff from an OSX xserver 10.3.9 xserver RAID for over 3 yrs, and continue to love it with Rampage....the less MS boxes on the floor, the less headaches for me to support. AFP client are NEEDED for a Rampage Box(PC) to an OSX server.

I was running Rampage JVX and an OSX 10.3.9 server for quite a while at my last shop. There are some very specific ways you need to set up SMB. You will need to get that info from RAMpage. Once I did that it worked great.

I've been on both and I'm currently on the OSX...I prefer the Windows server...there's several little reasons why...plus better support from Rampage on a Windows server. They don't know as much about the Mac servers it seems...
