X-Serve and Rampage
Hey all! Our Windows Server just went down and we're looking into a replacement. Is anybody using the X-Serve with Rampage and what do you think? Any problems? Thanks, Mat

Not using Rampage but we have 2 Xserve servers one with Panther and one with Tiger. I previously worked at an ISP with Linux, BSD, and Windows. I can definately vouch that OSX Server took something technical and gave it the apple touch.

I got an XServe soon after they came out.
I have the dual G4 model, FULL of RAM, runs 10.3.9.
4 - 180GB drives across the front, RAID set to mirror drive1 to drive3 and drive2 to drive4 thus resulting in 360GB to work with.
Not to mention the built in web server, email server, print server, ftp server, etc..... This thing is tons of fun.
I need one of these for the house!! :P :P :P

We struggle with a w2000 server with rampage. I have an Xserve on my wishing list to my boss. Thus no experience with it, i think you need to get a couple of specialmade PC-MAClan licenses for every RAMPAGE PC (RIP, DLT, Shooter).

Have an XServe and got the RAMpage demo last week... they said connecting was no problem - they use Mirmar's Appletalk product on the RIP, and connect up via Appletalk over IP.

Question: If Xserve supports AFP, SMB/CIFS, and NFS and you are serving a Windows client using SMB/CIFS why on Gods green Earth are you putting AFP on the CLIENT which just so happens to have native file system support (SMB/CIFS) on the server? That is totally asinine!~ Why not just use SMB? Putting AFP support on the client for writing to a AFP volume on a server that supports SMB/CIF doesn't make any sense at all. That's just adding an extra layer of communication for no valid reason that will slow down the system. RAMpage runs on Windows rights? Windows talks SMB right? Xserve supports Windows clients right? So what's the problem????
I think my head is going to explode!~

LOL! I hear ya Matt.. I flashed the guy a look when he mentioned that, and started walking down that path... He had that look like he agree'd wholeheartedly w/ me, but there was something else forcing the issue?
I suspect there's _something_ driving that solution, as the folks in Waltham aren't stupid, I just don't know what it is.

Hi all
I agree totally with Matt. I'd like to know the reason why they are using this.

I hope it gets fixed soon
Currently the Rampage client requires an AFP (Apple File Protocal) connection. Using an Xserve, I'm guessing that the RIP might not read the path correctly if it was connected using SMB.
