I agree that it sounds odd.
I made sure that we had the same version of Quark as our client and that did not work. I belong to another group specific to our workflow. A few months ago, I thought one of the members had mentioned font reflow problems with the new Intel Macs. I did not pay much attention to the post and kind of thought, 'That's crazy'. So when I came across this issue I tried just about everything I could think of, plus your suggestions and still was not getting anywhere. The reflow problem could be a 1 in 1000 type thing. The next thing that I am going to do is strip the Mac that had the reflow problem and rebuild it.

That seems a little drastic, it can only be software/font. I'm posting successfuly into the forum, what processor do I have?

You'll never know because it doesn't mater

After speaking with our client, I have come to find out that the reflow problem that we are experiencing coincides with their purchase of two new MACs.
By the way, this is the second title of this particular client that has had this issue with us. The client has sent other print titles to different printers and have had the same problem. The clients other printers have had no answer or solution to this reflow problem. I told them that I opened the file on an Intel Mac and the text flowed correctly, but it didn't necessarily make sense. The client said it made sense to them because they have been experiencing this problem with all their vendors since the purchase of their new Intel Macs. I wish she would have told me that at the beginning.
We are still going to do some additional tests. At least we have a solution.

Quark and Intel text reflow

I am working on a file that was created in Quark 7.1 and I am using 7.1, but I have an Intel machine. When I open the file everything seems fine, no warnings, pages appear normal. But when I scroll through the pages to check bleeds, links, etc. I see additional pages being added to the file and then I can find full columns of type missing, and if I keep scrolling the pages the type keeps getting worse. If I close the file and then reopen it, it opens correctly until I start scrolling again. What the heck is going on?

The Mac used to be so reliable in this business, but now it seems to be more and more pc like, very unreliable, especially in Quark.

Quark claims the 7.3 update fixes text reflow issues. It has not been confirmed from any reliable source though.

when you say you opened the file, did you double click on it or go file>open

as you'll get the keep axpress preferences or keep document preferences question/game - which did you do?

it may or may not be connected
