If it's not stressful you're either doing it wrong or you just don't give a shit.

OK, I realize that no one should quit their job if their boss won't invest in a PC with all possible apps.
What I am trying to say is that substituting fonts and converting documents is not the ideal way to do things. I can't count how many complaints I have gotten even substituting the same font, but different platform. Some customers pick up on even subtle changes in their pages.
I have done it both ways, and short of a PDF only workflow, I have found it a lot easier to satisfy customers by using what they are using.
And, YES, I would quit a job if they were forcing me to fudge things and cause conflicts with customers and have a high stress environment. But, it's been a long time since I've had to deal with those problems and I do feel sorry for those who are in those situations.

Hey, sorry I'm late,
that long file name issue may affect more than just .qxd7, BTW. It's good general knowledge for when an FTP upload won't work or a file won't copy, etc...
And for the "poll" I gotta go with almink and Pointy, we typically use the PC just long enough to make a PDF from .pub, and for internet training modules that won't work on the mac and tend to work on the mac workstations for all else. That's what seems to work best for all of us here anyways.

While I am not a PC fan at all, there's really no reason to be afraid to run a PC job on a PC. We have one with all the apps because we get PC jobs fairly regularly. I will only open a PC job on a Mac as a last resort in extreme troubleshooting circumstances.

good evening,
i agree with that concept, especially if you have a recurring customer that you know is going to send you pc jobs every time. where i am we rarely get pc jobs, and as long as we get hard copy to double-check all the final rips for reflow and font replacements, we have no problems using a mac. i agree with tbJAMMIN stating that native software-hardware is best, but in some cases it isnt practical, thats all. at least not practical enough to make me switch jobs!

I don't get paid enough to work on the PC. Plus the Mac is faster.

We try to use the same version of the software on the same platform if at all possible. And for jobs that come in like a phonebook that is done in Quark 4 on a PC, anywhere from 200 to 800 pages you can bet we're not going to do a cross platform on that. Also we do quite a few PageMaker jobs on the PC. Never had much luck trying to move them to the Mac so we usually work them on the PC. But smaller jobs, like others have mentioned that is either Publisher or even Corel Draw, we PDF and then Pitstop it to hell and back to make it right.
We just ordered Vista today so that should prove interesting in the coming weeks. CS3 for the PC is on the way too along with (bleh) Quark 7.

It's actually quite the opposite, I know exactly what I am doing and am able to talk any customer through any problems to the best of their ability. I require correct, or at least useable files from customers and I will visit problem accounts and am able to train their graphic people to do things right. It is a little extra work doing it this way, but I don't get phone calls all night long about problems on the presses.
