Printing to Canon PIXMA Pro 9000

Hi, this is my first post, so sorry if you get bombarded with this sort of query, had a search and can't find anything useful.

I've just bought a Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 and can't get it to print properly from Quark. It prints all .eps files etc at screen resolution and I can only print by selected Generic Colour Printer in the print dialogue box.

I can't find a PPD file though and Canon's help desk is rather unhelpful. I used to use an Epson 1290 with Powerrip X software - am I going to have to source a suitable RIP to print from Quark? Is one available?

Thanks in advance.

It seems that the Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 is not supported by Powerrip X. I think it's highly unlikely that you'll get a rip out of Quark. They don't do rips or drivers. I just searched Quarks site and drew a blank.

You could make a pdf and print that to get around your current situation.

Hi Dupple, thanks for the quick response. Making PDFs is far from ideal - I do 99% of my work in Quark and I really need to find a way of printing direct. Thanks again...

I know what you mean

Just out of interest are you Mac or PC? Without a rip of some kind either hardware or software you're going to be stuck with printing the preview that Quark uses to display on screen.

Mac. Just been on to Canon again, they told me to ring Adobe (?) who've told me to download some PPDs, there doens't seem to be one for my printer though. Any idea what RIP will work?
Thanks...

Just about any rip depending on your workflow, it's quite a large topic. On the Adobe site you can download Adobe PS driver which is generic. You would print through that to your Canon. You can get it here

It's free, give it a go.

Lead you up the garden path with that, it seems it won't work with OS X. ops:

Couple of questions....did you install the printer in OS X Printer Setup? And if so can you print to it at high res from other apps using the Canon PPD that it installed in Printer Setup? If so it sounds like an issue of Quark not seeing the PPD. Make sure it in the location that Quark is looking for PPD's.

Thanks for the input Joe, I've done a search and I can't find a PPD that has been installed anywhere so I can't copy it into Quark's PPD folder.

I've tried printing from Illustrator, and it allows me to specify the printer, but doesn't actually select a PPD (The PPD dropdown goes blank and can't be selected). I never usually print from Illustrator so I'm not too conversant with it! The output isn't brilliant either, pantone colours are miles out and vector illustrations look quite low res.

Printing from PDFs gives the most accurate results but it's a far from ideal solution. I've contacted Printfab to see if their software RIP is compatible - it looks like my final hope! I don't think Gimpprint supports it.

It's really annoying, I spent a lot of time researching this and other printers before buying it. Canon shouldn't be pitching it at creative professionals if it's not compatible with industry-standard systems and software.
