Quark v6.5 and Adobe Open Type Fonts

First a little background:

Quark v6.5
Mac OSX10.3.9 and Mac OSX 10.4
Dual 1.8GHz G5 with 2.5GB Ram
Fonts managed on a Font Reserve Server and activated by Font Reserve Client 1.7.6

Before anyone jumps on the change to Indesign Bandwagon we are already on it. In the front row as a matter of fact. We switched our 100 user Prepress over in 2004 to Indesign and have never thought of looking back. We need to have Quark available for the jobs we receive from our customers that seem to still think Quark is the answer. Can't change the customers and can't fully survive without them.

Since upgrading to Mac version X we have always used our old Postscript fonts to create our jobs. We have always had the Adobe Open Type Fonts but have never put them into production. As the Mac OS evolves we have noticed that the old Postscript fonts don't play friendly with the newer Mac OS versions. We have also had conformation from Apple that the only fonts that are supported in v 10.4.x and up will be the Open Type Fonts.

This leads to my problem. While testing the implementation of the Open Type Fonts we have noticed that whenever we try to use Quark 6.5 with the Open Type Fonts it crashes. We have rebuilt prefs and this hasn't been the answer. I have seen several posting on other sites that Quark 6.5 does not work with Open Type Fonts and that even Quark 7 is the rock solid answer. The other problem is that Quark 7 only works with Tiger and as you see in the spec section we are running both Tiger and Panther. Don't ask, its a corporate thing I'd rather not get into.

Has anyone else had any experience with Quark 6.5 and Open Type Fonts? Just curious if I'm the only one with the problem.

You'll get various results with open type in Quark. In theory you should be OK with the first 250 odd characters, but quite simply 6.5 doesn't support open type. Version 7 does.

Older postscript fonts are giving everyone headaches. Anything from before 1992 I think, should be binned and repurchased.

I'm just about to the point in our shop to only except press-ready PDF's from Quark customers. It's been a built in feature long enough for any user to export to PDF with the correct settings and if it doesn't export correctly, it's up to them to fix it or point out the problems and I will fix the PDF. Quark is the only reason I ever need to restart my Mac, besides Apple system updates. Doing the "font dance" for Quark is a chore I'm sick of and so is my G5.
