Hardware:

Windows 2000 File Server
Windows 2003 File Server
5, OS X End Users (10.4)

Previous Scenario: 5 OS X users scan images locally on their computers and edit them with Photoshop. After the files have been edited, they are saved on the Windows 2000 server. The Macs are able to browse the Windows 2000 share, find a .qxp (Quark) file, double-click it, and the file opens fine with the program associated with it.

Current Scenario: We have installed brand new hardware and a fresh installation of Windows 2003 Standard. File and Print Services for Mac was installed and a share was created. All Macs are able to successfully connect with read/write access. After the end users are done scanning and editing the images, they save them to the Windows 2003 server in the same fashion as the old Windows 2000 server.

Problem 1: We are not able to open a Quark file on the Windows 2003 server by double-clicking the file. I have followed the steps of assinging an application to these files (i.e. get info > open with...> Aways with this app >Change all). This fixes the problem for that particular file, but all other files remain the same. There are no file extensions listed for these files on the Windows 2003 server. Although, there were none listed on the Windows 2000 server either, but it worked fine.

Problem 2: The Macs are taking a very long time to search the new Windows 2003 server. When they search for a file name, it will take several minutes, or even error out. When the Macs search the old Windows 2000 server with virtually the same file set, the results are returned in a matter of a few seconds.

Note: Everything is working fine for all x86 end users . They are not experiencing problems with scanning, accessing, storing, or retrieving the documents. I would see no problem manually re-naming each file and adding an extension to all the Quark files, but there are tens of thousdands of images and hundreds added daily, so this is out of the question.

I have seen this question asked a couple times, but the posts go unanswered. Any advice or references would be greatly appreciated.

how are these Macs mounted to the server?

AFP or SMB?

. Or if you want to go the pay route there is ExtremeZ-IP.

The built in SFM in Windows is just horrible, and I can't stand that people would actually use it, or even that MS includes it in their software. Also, there is PC MacLan, which also works better than Windows SFM, is cheaper than ExtremeZ-IP but it doesn't support afp 3.1.
