yeah, you're right. The only way it works is if you turn off facing pages.
I did it with:
Insert a blank before pg 1,
facing pages selected,
made the fake pg1 a section start,
then turned off facing pages and it made the new pg1 a left page and left all the others as two page spreads.
But, you do still have a blank page before your "pg1".
Will that get it for you?
