"Unrecognized Version" PDF import problem in Quark

I searched for but did not find any info on the forum for this:

I go to bring a PDF into a Quark layout, into a plain old picture box, and Quark sez in the import window:

"Unrecognized Version"

Is there any way around this? It happens every once in a while but it's driving me up the wall on one job. Thanks!

I think Quark only recognizes PDF's up to PDF 1.5. I have also seen this with PDF files that have security enabled. Make sure security is set to none in the PDF with Acrobat.

Watch out for invalid characters in the file name. That one cost me 2 days even with Quarks help. Look for something odd in the name of the file OR EVEN the folder it is in. True. Mine was a right bracket "(" in the folder name. I call Quark back and they said "thanks" we know....

It IS a newer version PDF. Either EPS it or use Pitstop to change version.

Thank you, it's good to know I wasn't losing my mind, just losing more faith in Quark.

After bashing my head about I found a fix, though a ridiculous one: Open original PDF in Acrobat, save as EPS file, bring the EPS file into a temporary dummy Quark document, export to PDF, bring that PDF into Quark layout and it sticks, final resolution intact.

Now, why not just save the PDF as EPS and use that in Quark? Well, at least on my end, the preview that shows up in the image box is a gray field with a little file title message in the middle, ie. no image to work with. The fix mentioned above yields a PDF that can at least be seen in the Quark layout, so basic interaction with other elements in the layout can be handled with some accuracy.

- Cheers

You can have Acrobat create the preview for the eps in the EPS settings.

Be careful doing the PDF to EPS to PDF route. I've had strange things happen but never with any consistency. Just when you think it works great something will pop up and bite you in the ass when you least expect it.

99% of the time i just save it back to an earlier version from acrobat and that works.

This is what you should be doing. Placing a PDF in Quack is a crap shoot
from my experience. Even if you are on a PC the option should be there for
a preview to be saved with the EPS file.

Of course if you used that other layout application...

Yeah, I always double check my proofs, with EPS to PDF to EPS to PDF to... AGGHH!!

I notice fonts go haywire and sometimes little bits of vector art go wonky.

In those cases, if it's not too complicated, I'll just make a little hi-res rasterized version of the 'bad part' of the PDF/EPS (whichever state it's in) and lay an image-box-patch over the offender in the layout.

And make the plates and get the job the heck outa' my site!
