QXP 4.1 Command-S gets Save As instead of Save
Is it okay to post this non-graphics question?
In QuarkXPress 4.1 (139) to which I have just been forced to upgrade because 3.2 "expired" Jan-1-2004, on my 9600/233 Mac using System 9.1 or 7.6.1, every time I hit Command-S, or choose Save from the menu, the Save As dialog box comes up, requiring me to stop and make sure that I'm still aiming the save towards the correct folder, then click Replace. I looked in Preferences but couldn't find any setting to get rid of this. Does anyone know how I can return to the normal expectation that when working on a document, every few minutes I should be able to hit Save and it will write to the existing file in half a second without any dialog box showing up. By the way, when I choose Save As, it still functions the same way, i.e. there is zero difference between Save and Save As.

when you do your first "save as" be sure you are saving it as a 4.0 file..
Quark will always bring up the save as when you are dealing with a file that was saved in an older version of quark..
I think the "save as" is defaulting to a 3.3 doc, so it keeps bringing up that window.

I don't understand how Quark 3 has 'expired' on 01.01.04. Did it just stop working because of a tech problem or did you have some sort of special licencing deal?
I just tried an old copy here and it seems to be fine.

Windows in 4.1 kept shrinking - "Save Doc Position"
Thanks Cory for the feedback. I had at first been saving the documents as 4.0 files, but they kept shrinking on the screen, so I switched to saving them as 3.3, and kept getting the "Save As". Now I'm reverting to saving them as 4.0, where I don't get the "Save As" but they keep shrinking again. So I tried unchecking, in Edit...Preferences...Application... the "Save Document Position", and that seems to fix it.

Is your QXP version 3.2?
Bart is your old QuarkXPress version 3.2? As opposed to 3.0 or 3.32 etc.. The alert I got on January 1, upon opening 3.2, if I recall correctly, was "this version of QuarkXPress is no longer valid" or words to that effect. Incredulous, I tried again to open it, and this time got "QuarkXPress has been damaged. Please contact Quark for assistance. [2]". Each time I tried it thereafter I got the "damaged" message, and never again the "not valid" message. This happened even if I temporarily set the date on my Mac back to 2003 and restarted.
Then, with much dread, I eventually was able to reach a Quark Inc. saleslady, intending to ask whether it was company policy that programs self-destruct after some period of time, or on the other hand, would some sort of patch be available which I could download in order to resuscitate 3.2. She said simply, "we don't support those earlier versions like 3.2, sir". From here on it was pure stonewall, as so many have experienced attempting to deal with that company.
I do have a backup copy of the program, stuffed, on one of my backup drives, so if indeed your version is 3.2 and it's working in 2004, I could try unstuffing my backup copy, changing the date on my Mac back to 2003 again, and then seeing if the program will open. Or if your version is some other, it would be of interest to find out that only 3.2 got the Mission Impossible auto-sizzle.
Something I might try with 4.1, and other people might want to try with versions they own, is to change the Mac's date from 2004 to, say, 2030, and see if the program will open.

I've got version 3.31.
I've never heard of software with a use-by date before - this could only be a Quark issue!!!!!. Anybody else?

I just started up 3.32r5 OK in Classic. This was the last version before 4 was released. I vaguely seem to remember reading that it is 3.32r2 (or something) that expired on 1/1/2004.
Actually, I don't think it has 'expired', it is simply a bug.
I suggest running the updater (if you can find it) to the final revision.
Or continue using 4 of course.

Yep, I've got 3.2, and I'm getting the same thing - Classic on Jaguar. I knew Quark was going to get me for not upgrading eventually!
I don't have occasion to use Quark much anymore, and this is the first time I've launched it this year. Bugger - I don't use it enough to justify repurchasing it. Looks like Scribus is going to get a run.
There isn't a 3.2->3.3 updater out there, is there?

QuarkXPress 3.2 self destructs on 1/1/2004
I have version 3.2 of QuarkXPress and when I tried to open it today got the message "This version of QuarkXPress is no longer valid. Contact Quark for assistance. [1]" Then running the program again results in this mesage "QuarkXPress has been damaged. Please contact Quark for assistance. [2]" with the modification date set to that of the current date. QuarkXPress wasn't damaged, it self destructed. Replacing with a backup copy and setting the date before 1/1/2004 gets the program to run again. Locking the application also prevents the damage from occuring when run after it's expiration date.
