crop marks, other page markings disappearing in rip

hi,

this has been a troublesome problem for quite some time now... i output from quark to plate. we have an oman system so i print as a postscript file into a special folder which swaps from lores to hires images.

at this point i oftentimes lose page markings that i manually place, crop or foldmarks, color info, even actual picture boxes. most of the time i can make some of this stuff show up after varying attempts, but i spend a lot more time than i should be and am still unsuccessful at times.

anyone else been in my shoes?

First off, welcome to the forum.

secondly... I cant resist the expected quark bashing response...

I am sure there are quite a few that have seen this, as quark is an inferior program. Do you have the capability to print from InDesign instead... now that that is said and out of the way, anyone got an actual solution for this quark question?

Im thinking we need more info on "how" you are creating your .ps files and what RIP you are using and what version of quark, yada, yada, yada... :P

not sure if this will help but from my own experience....STAY AWAY FROM QUARK 5! I had all kinds of strange things happen through this version including dissapearing crop marks and slug lines. It does not work well with our ApogeeX rip, something to do with the page border. Never ever had such problems with version 4 or 6.5. I'd try and open all your files in 6.5 and go from there..

I'm thinking that it is related to your OPI use. Your OPI server must not be swapping some of the placed marks and images out successfully.
Do you get any error messages when these are processed?

Also...

what OS, what ver. of Quark, yada, yada, yada

quark: crop marks, misc. page markings disappearing....

i'm using quark 4.1, on a pc w/ windows NT.
(indesign is actually on its way to save the day, but for now i have to make quark do my bidding)

i made an error in describing my problem: looks like the manually placed markings, etc. are disappearing when i print a ps file into our "postscript" folder which utilizes the OPI system, before even sending it to the rip.

i wouldn't have thought that the opi system would affect crop marks, etc. but that must be whats happening since everythings fine until the file gets to that point.

the only other thing i can think of is that i have an incorrect setting in the print dialog when i print the ps file...?

thanks to all for your help

As long as you are "manually" placing the marks make sure they touch or are at least .001" in on the page you are printing, then make sure you allow for enough bleed to let the marks print. If you are placing marks on a Letter size document and print to the same size sheet the marks will be lost make sure your "Paper" size is at least 1/2" (per side) larger than the document itself and you should have no problems of loosing the marks.

This is how I put manual color bars on some jobs. when I print a 4/color document that is 7" x 10" on a 8.5" x 11" size paper I will put a .25" wide by .376" tall box to a coordinate setting of x=0 y=-.375" then step it however many times at .25" across the top of the page and fill each one with whatever color I need C,M,Y,K, etc. then draw a 10pt. rule stroked white (or Paper for you ID folks) and put it right on the edge of the sheet on top of the bars to make sure I have at least a 1/16" clearance from the bars to the sheet edge. I then make sure my bleed setting are .5" on top and .125 everywhere else, and I'm all set
