Strange Output

Not sure- maybe- it's a Brsque thing- maybe Photoshop- but it's coming out of Quark so I'll try here...

Customer gives us a jpeg of a logo for his letterhead. We save it as a tif and place it in Quark at 15% and colorize it- when e print- it comes out all jagged.

Things we tried (and failed):
resize in Photoshop and place at 100%
send with ascii data checked
save as a 16 bit tif and place
send from Quark 4 and 5
send from the PC
send with full res tif checked

Finally, I saved it as bitmap tif and placed and it looked fine.

I don't understand why. In Photoshop, all the logos looked the same quality. They are all 300 dpi. They print fine from Photoshop. I've placed grayscale tifs and colorized many times and never saw this.

Why on this one file is it acting so strange?

I gave up on trying to understand why something happens.
One day it don't print the next it does.

Re: Strange Output

I noticed you are using a Brisque Rip. I used one a couple years back and that was one of the quirks about it.

If you have any images, logos or scans that are not a bitmap (1bit tif etc...) then it will rip at the final ct resolution at it's final size. So regardless if you place a 300 dpi logo at 25% or at 100% it will be ripped at the ct resolution set at the rip at it's final size.

Are the logos being close cropped overlap any other images? If so the edges of the overlap will be ripped at the CT resolution and will appear jagged unles LW resolve is activated at the rip. This will rip the CT at LW resolution where it overlaps another CT.

I now use the Nexus rip and have found by increasing the rip'd CT resolution to 600 dpi then logos as in your example rip fine. The added resolution doesn't really affect the overall time it takes to rip.

Hope this helps.

The btimap is always the best option if you can go that route. Especially with single colored images.
I've found that it's best to "res" up to 2400 dpi in Photoshop. Then change the image mode to bitmap @ 2400 dpi using the 50% threshold option. I have done this numerous times with great results.
