Quark 4.11 crashing when Saving in Classic Mode...

I'm running OS X 10.3.1 and we own Quark 6, but everything in house is still off of Quark 4.11 because of extensions and the like. My problem that I am running into is when trying to save a large Quark document, my Quark quite often just quits. The file is saved, but I have to relaunch Quark and reopen the document to continue working. Sometimes it even quits "Classic Mode". Has anyone else experienced similar results? Anyone know of a "fix" for this? I know it's not a corrupt file because I can work with it on an OS 9 machine, and we also have other OS X machines that are doing the same thing as I am but not experiencing the same problems.

Did you upgrade the machine from OS 9 to OS X? If so you may want to ditch you old OS 9 system folder and reinstall a new fresh one, or set teh extensions to "OS 9 only". My machine running 10.3.1 has some odd problems like that, the other machine here does not. The only difference I can find between the two is the uniqueness of the OS 9 system.

Problem solved...

It was actually something pretty stupid - I misunderstood how OS X works - I thought it automatically managed the memory of all programs but I learned it does not manage the memory of OS 9 applications - consequently, I only had 9 MB assigned to Quark! Well, I've raise that to 130MB, not crashes, and its amazing how much faster it runs! Thanks for your help!

No point giving QuarkXPress 4 more than, say, 30MB. Remember that QXP is old; it was written when RAM was much tighter. It only holds in memory the current, previous and following spreads. All else is paged to disk cache. Unlike with modern programs, giving it heaps of memory is just a waste.

This may be true for the straight program, but mayn of the plug-ins we are running are really helped by having the larger amounts of memory available to them.
