Missing character on output?
Hello everyone,
I've got a problem under Acrobat Distiller 6 (and I've try there is also the same problem with Distiller 7):
I make a QuarkXPress 6.5 doc which using Futura then I make a PostScript file. This PS file is drop into an HotFolder of Distiller, it's looks fine but there is some missing character (it seems that the character missing is always the " ' " - apostrophe - but not in all the document, on the same PDF it could missing in an article but not in the next)? In fact, I have the same problem on another Quark doc which also using Futura font. I have test all function in Distiller (embedded, subsetted, etc) but I always got the same result. It's strange because if I take the same PS file and drop it in an HotFolder of Distiller 5 or 4, then the PDF have all caracter even that one is missing in Acrobat 6?
Is there any issue to this problem?
Thanks
Jerome

Try it without subsetting the fonts. I have had characters drop out in the past, and that is all I could come up with. But, it fixed it every time.

Does it look okay on the screen?
When you print it out it's missing letters/characters?
Is the text in question in an .eps file placed in Quark?
In most cases, .eps files do not embed fonts, so you may be having an issue with this. If it is, see if you can outline the font to resolve your issue.

Thank you for your answer,
I make some test but it still unbelievable!
In fact, the missing character (which is on Quark box, not in an EPS) appears if I select to don't print some images (not all) on the layout and if I change the typeface this character appears but being missing on the 2nd article (while this character is still being present on an another part of the document)?
I try all function in Acrobat 6, sub-setted for 0%, sub-setted for 100%, deactivate sub-setting but I always got the problem. This problem occurs on screen and also in print. And, I also got this problem on another document with another typeface (in this case GillSans).
The only solution I found yet is to use Acrobat Distiller 4 but it's not a real issue when your computer is running on MacOS X.4.2
Thanks
Jerome

So you're running Tiger, eh.
What are you using for font management?
Suitcase, Font Agent Pro, or what?
So you're saying that it is missing in the quark doc as you view it on the screen?
You may need to do some font cleaning:
1. Delete the ttfont folder in your application/quark/jaws folder
2. Do a "find" on your mac for "adobefnt" without the quotes. Delete every thing with the .lst extension, do not delete the files with the .db extension.
3. Use Font Finagler - 0.5.3 to clean up your font caches.
hope this helps,
David

Hi David,
sorry, I'm not explain me like I want - maybe because I'm french and i'm not talking english very well :-)
This problem is only on the PDF (distilled by Acrobat 6), the Quark looks fine. This problem occurs on, at this time I've no test the others, at least 4 computers running OS X.3.9 or X.4.2 and 2 of them using Suitcase X.1 while the others using FontAgentPro. On one of them I deactivate the 2 Xtensions which cause others problems (FontDownloadingXT, FontRetrieve XT) and I also activate FontFace but the problem is still there but i'm not sure is a Quark problem because the same PS is distill fine with Acrobat 4?
Thanks

Okay, I don't mind the french accent if you can put up with my texas drawl!
LOL
did you try the three things in the previous message to clean out your font caches?
If you didn't, give 'em a try, you'll be glad you did....hopefully.
Seriously, I've seen Quark 6.5 do strange things to fonts when the caches are full and they just don't want to cooperate.
David
PS. Remake your .ps file from quark after you clean the font caches and see if that doesn't help.
