Quark 6 bleeds

Wondering if anyone can tell me what is the deal with the bleed printing setting in quark 6? I'm designing a page with a bleed off all the sides. I'd like to print it with the bleeds cut out for the customer to proof, but that particular box in the print menu is grayed out. Quark help says something about I have a plug in installed that overrides that...what the heck is that? I didn't install it. Did it come with quark 6? Where is this mysterious thing?

Related question...when i made a pdf of it it didn't take out the bleeds either. What is the problem with that? Was it supposed to? Was I hallucinating?

Quark 6
G5
Adobe Acrobat 6

Thanks!!!

I haven't got a copy of Quark 6 but in the Print Dialog is there not a bleed box? What is entered in there? If it is 0 then you won't get any bleed.

The plug-in Quark are talking about may be the Custom Bleeds XT in the XTensions folder - can you find that? If so put it in the disabled XTensions folder.

In the print dialog there is a bleed tab, but all the items are GRAYED OUT so I can't change any of the settings. The Clip at Bleed box even has a check in it, but it is grayed out too.

I tried moving the custom bleed extension into the disabled folder, but then the bleed tab in the dialogue box completely disappeared.

HELP!! it just cannot be this difficult...it has to be one button somewhere!!

Maybe this has something to do with the PPD you've selected. Try changing it to another PPD (Postscript Printer Description).

bleeds

finally broke down and called quark.

They said that since i'm printing to a non-postscript printer...the bleed specs are not available. So since my boss just bought all this computer equipment, he called and asked what we could do about this. (I'd like to have some sort of an idea how a job would print before we give it to our printer).

So, they (computer people that sold us this equpment) say we can get a postscript emulator program for our desktop printer here...does anybody know if that truly works or are we throwing more money at something that won't work? I knew I should've been involved in the purchasing process!

Searching for a postscript printer for the size we need would be over $3000 and guess what? Boss won't go for that.

Do you have Acrobat? If so print to the Adobe PDF Printer. It's postscript so you should be able to print bleeds. Distill to a PDF and print to your non PS printer.

PostScript Printer--Then Quark 6 will work?

If you need to go to a PostScript printer just to get the Bleed activated, you can make one in OS X through the Print Center (in the applications/Utilities folder).

1) After opening the printer list in Print Center hold down the Option key and choose the Add+ button.

2) In the resulting printer setup dialog window, choose the IP printing for communication type (rather than AppleTalk, etc.).

3) The next window gives you a place for an IP address. Just type "localhost" in that field. You can call this anything you deem appropriate in the Queue field.

4) The Generic printer description can remain. However, I find I get good PostScript files for PDFs from navigating to the OS 9's Acrobat Distiller printer description file via the Other... option.

This printer allows you to create good PostScript files that work well with Acrobat Distiller 5.x in the Classic environment. To get a PostScript file, go to the Output Options pop-up in the Print dialog window, check the to file checkbox and choose PostScript in the format pop-up window. The PDF option there is just like the OS X generic PDF format, no compression, downsampling, etc.

I have also found that you can print good PDF files to an inkjet printer, like yours in your work environment, unlike the native QuarkXPress files that have EPS files placed, etc., out of Acrobat or Reader.

good luck!

thanks joe...and t-rex!

will try those ideas out and see what happens.

our computer guy suggested buying POWERRIPX from iproof and getting an epson printer. That would be a $369 software solution plus price of printer.

how come solutions always involve more money???????
