.*.*changing quark text color and traping help*.*.

I received a 2 color 16 page book in quark today. it was type with allot of pictures that had to be changed to duotons. it also had alot of type that was overprinted and at 20% screens. I had to go through all the 20% screens and change them to black 20%shade. I also had to go through about 20 pictures and change them to duo tones. quark is still seeing that there is 20% screens but when i send it to the rip (express rip) the plates come up with nothing on them. it also has some other process color coming. the rip comes up as nothing there.
my question is ....

Is there a program that will search my quark document find and change all the 20% screens to black, 20% shade?

Is there something out there that will see what color the text boxes are and change the trapping for me?

and ....

why is there another process color coming up that doesnt go anywhere or rip anything?

i looked under every box every picture and so on for it but i cant find it....

Is there a rip type program that i can send it too thats not my rip so i dont have to send it to the rip and check it there. IE: a mock rip software thatll act like a rip that i can install on the machine that im working on? I have to go across the room and wait for it to process at the rip's computer and roam it, just wondering if i can do it faster at my computer......
This will also enable me to work things out at home without going to print plates to PDF and check them in photo shop......

and wile im at it......

is there a program that i can drag a picture file on and it tell me whats in it? ie: colors, cmyk, duotone, process colors, file type, ect. Im just looking for an essayer way to check pictures in a file like this. What i ended up doing is opening them all up in photoshop and going through it there...

thanks for all the help guys.

I'm not quite sure about the problem with the file. A 20% screen and blk 20% shade is exactly the same thing. And as far as process color printing. What quark are you in? Sometimes it doesn't matter if you have the duotone set up correctly quark will still print them cmyk. (sometimes)

Did you get any prepress training before you started working? Without seeing the job or getting more info it's hard to know what to tell you.

We have a Creo extension for Quark 4 on all of our machines here. I haven't used Quark 4 for a quite some time now, but I think we had installed it because duotones were processing out - using the Creo Brisque 4 system that is. Check out the Quark and/or Creo downloads online if you're using Creo. If not, maybe check whatever your RIP is for extensions for Quark.

well ive been a pressman shop monkey for a long wile now. a recent injury put me in the prepress room indefinitely.

the problem with the 20% screen is..... the designer has things set to 20% screen and my rip rips it out as a separate plate.. 20% screen is a swatch color setting in quark. and it sees it as a different color/plate when its set that way. thats why i had to go through the doc and change all the instances to black-20% shade. so itll put all of them on the back plate.

I had to go through the document and make all these changes myself.
my question was....

is there an program/extension that will go though and find all of one color (ie: pms 286) and change them to another color (ie: reflex blue)?

is there a program / extention that will go through and find all the text thats one color (ie: black) and change the trapping info for me?

is there a

the duo tones all came out ok. i just have a stray color thats being printed but theres nothing on the plate at the rip.
were useing quark 5, and an express rip.

I haven't heard of a program like that for Quark, but it sounds like the holy grail. If it's out there, and it worked properly consistantly, it'd be pretty sweet.

Easy fix. Open the edit/colors panel, select colors used, select the swatch that represents the 20% screen and hit the delete button. In the dialog box that will come up replace it with black.

Doing it this way will replace every instance of "20% screen" to 100%k (because the "20% screen" color is probably applied at 100% strength throughout the document), which is not what you want. Better to just edit the color and unclick the "Spot" checkbox so Q%uark will treat the color as process. I'm assuming that the description of the color is 20k, so when it is seen as process it will remain 20%k.
