Placing Acrobat 6(PDF 1.5) in Quark 5
I am working in quark 5, OS9. I open and color remap a PDF file in Acrobat 6 using pitstop, saving the file which is a PDF 1.5. I tried placing the file in Quark 5 and a error states it not a recognized file format. Is there a way to save down a Acobat 6 (PDF 1.5) down to a PDF 1.4 or less so I can place it in Quark 5?

Acrobat 6 Pro has a menu item under File called Reduce File Size. This will not downsample any images or anything worrying like that, but it will give you an selection of acrobat 4/5/6 to save it into.
Hope this helps

I'd be careful of that.... the reduce file size function uses the preferences set in Advanced>PDF Optimizer. I would use this tool rather than reduce file size as it allows you to specify PDF version, image resolution and compression, basically your PDF job settings.

Sorry... not sure if that is indeed true for the reduce file size function.. it is however downsampling images to 150 dpi, anyone know if there are any options for this? PDF Optimizer is the only way to go it seems to not loose or compress any information while saving down the version.

You could save your pdf as a postscript file, and distill it with 1.3 compatability.
Using the optimizer would be the way to go. It elliminates the extra step of saving to .ps and you have controll over your images. When you make a change in pitstop make sure in your Enfocus prefernces, under the tools tab, you have "Prevent the auto change of PDF version when saving" ON. Otherwise you will be back to where you started, ( a 1.5 pdf).

PDF Optimizer can screw up your file also by downsampling. Be sure to check the compression settings carefully.

I always open it up in a lower version of acrobat and save it in that version. Then place the PDF back in quark.

Be very careful placing PDFs into Quark. You can use PitStop to change the PDF version. Only do so IF YOU KNOW FOR SURE that there are NO PDF v1.4 features being used. Refrying the PDF is not advisable, but CAN work. Your best bet is to place the PDF into InDesign.

PDF optimizer is certainly geared towards downsampling and not what you want.
Just select Reduce File Size from the file menu to change versions, it's by far the easiest and safest (and native - no pitstop needed) route.

It has been my experience that Reduce file size DOES in fact downsample images to 150 dpi. With PDF Optimizer you have control over downsampling and can turn it off if you wish. I am not sure if there is any preference for Reduce File Size to tell it not to downsample.
