We use Quark 4.11, 5, 6.1 and 6.5, depending on our clients needs. I don't know the technical reason for Quark 6 producing such large files(and neither do the several Quark Tech Support guru's I've asked... surprise) all I know is that they work fine.
Although Quark states that they do not support working on documents across a network, the only draw back I have noticed to these large documents is that, on occasion, it will take several minutes for a document to open. There are certain things which can be done to "speed up" the opening process when working on large documents such as making sure the "auto image import" feature is turned off and lowering the preview display. Even with all the text book things done, some documents still randomly take forever to open.
Also, once a document is opened in Quark 6 (new or from a different version) and the file size grows, it stays that way... even when they are downsaved to an older version. An example of this was a test document we worked with on this. It was originally a 47mb, 48 page catalog produced in Quark 4.11. Once opened and saved in Quark 6 it became 485mb and it stayed that way even when downsaved (through 5) back to 4.
Sorry, no help... just elaborating on the topic with more examples. Although to restate, we have had no adverse effects to the large documents... it appears to just be a major nuisance.
