Quark Announces Free Commercial Use of QuarkXPress for Students Worldwide

Students now can gain an edge in the marketplace by using their QuarkXPress education Licenses commercially at no additional cost and upgrading at a special price after graduation.

(Press Release)

Quark Inc. today announced universal availability of a program that enables students to use their QuarkXPress education licenses to produce creative materials for the marketplace while still in school. Students can also continue using their education licenses for the current version of QuarkXPress after graduation for commercial design and production. Quark has also extended this policy to education licenses for Quark Interactive Designer and Quark Print Collection."The International Academy of Design & Technology, Chicago has been teaching our students Quark software skills for well over 10 years," said Katie Haviland, Viscom adjunct instructor at IADT Chicago. "We applaud Quark for its renewed commitment to education and for implementing this program because it will give our students an edge as they graduate and enter the competitive design market."

Quark now also enables students to upgrade to the latest version of QuarkXPress after graduation at the commercial upgrade price -- eliminating the need for purchasing a full copy of QuarkXPress. In addition, students are able to use their Education licenses for QuarkXPress on either Mac or Windows.

Quark has recently introduced a variety of additional programs in communities around the globe to support the education of young designers, including new pricing for students and educators, training, wider availability of student licenses through resellers such as Amazon and Apple Online, and curriculum development.

"Quark is committed to advancing the education of the world's future designers," said Terry Welty, senior vice president, corporate marketing, Quark. "By providing graduates with access to the latest innovations of QuarkXPress, Quark Interactive Designer and Quark Print Collection, we give young designers an advantage as they enter the marketplace and further their creative careers."

To purchase QuarkXPress at a discounted price for students and educators and to learn more about the Quark education program visit www.quark.com/education/purchase.html.

Quark readily admits at trade shows that most of their base is in "institutional"" customers. Newspapers, magazines, etc. Where as Adobe has the graphic designers. Several of the Quark people that I have spoken to in the past have said that they'd like to get more designers but they're not really "focused" on it. They want to keep their existing customers happy.

I agree that quark has always been dominate with the QPS - in regards to newspapers and publishers, but it's not like Adobe isn't focusing on those customers either.

I know our local paper recently switched from a quark system to a indesign based system.

How about letting Adobe buy them. That might work....

What appears to be happening in the UK is that Design Houses are moving to Indy, it's cheaper, basically for the price of any flavour of CS you're getting Indy for free (and better functionality), you're gonna buy PS and Illy anyway... Adobe are giving away Indy... Publishing (News and Magazines) is hanging with Quark because of legacy automation xtensions, that are being sold at a heavy discount (relatively) for the upgrade, though there is a lot of movement away from Quark in that market

The only way Quark can retaliate is give away Xpress because no one is buying? Hmm, not sure about that business model.

As a side note Extensis are in a similar situation with Suitcase, Linotype could potentially wipe them out.

If you were putting a new production department together, why would you put Extensis or Quark on the shopping list? You wouldn't, I'm not.
