Grayscale or Black and White

Anyone using the Black and White feature in PS CS3?
Any good results?

I've played with it, but still prefer the old stand-by method.
Convert to LAB - Choose Lightness Channel - adjust contrast if need be - Unsharp Mask - Convert to Grayscale - save as...

No but I have been using the Highlight/Shadow feature since it came out.
Got CS3 installed just haven't seen the need to use it yet.

I don't have CS3 on my work machine yet so I haven't tried it. I watched a demo of the B&W function and it looked pretty nifty.

Born2- No, I don't get to use PS as much as it seems that I used to.
Joe- I saw one too, I think from a link you posted.. Yabadaba-dobe or something....
Now that you mention it - they were going from Color to BW, most of what I've done so far w/ CS3 has been BW RGB Images... you know - the ones that "look ok on screen" but are really RGB!
I'll have to go back and try some more color work to BW.

Thanks for the replies..
Vee

I have PS CS3, but I haven't really needed to use the new features yet.
Luckily/unluckily I don't have to do much with PS besides clean scans and
convert color spaces. I probably would have told the boss that I'd be happy
to stick with v7, but I wanted the rest of the CS3 Des. Std. suite. Checking
CS3 out a bit more is 2nd or 3rd on my back burner list, so I'll be checking
a bit more in the next 6 months, or as time allows.

AMEN tom
Maybe "Photoshop usage" would be a good poll?
I miss the long hours of masking, comping, touchups, etc... etc... that we used to do back in the days before the CCD scanner

We had Photoshop CS3 installed but took it off for some anoying bugs.

I did get a chance to use the black and white feature however.....it works quite well.

it's sort of like an automated feature of what I've been doing for years.......when there's a color picture that has to be converted to gray and, for example, red is on a dark blue background (ie, type) and you know you won't be able to read it, you'd go into - Image-Adjustments-selective color and adjust before the conversion.

I can't remember the CS3 dialogue box but I think its a little bit better than doing it the old way. More control and stuff.

I have an issue sort of related to the topic, so I thought I'd ask it here.

Basically, we add or convert gray profiles to an client submitted image. We then save it as a PDF and run it through Prinergy.

This is the following problem. When you open the image up in Acrobat, there are four separations for the b&w image. If you use the eye dropper it appears to be in a gray colorspace. Prinergy sees this as four color as well. What are we doing wrong that's not making the PDF just one black separation. When saved w/o a profile, it is single black.

We have a few work arounds (drop in Indy, refine b&w in prinergy), but would just want to fix the issue all together. Is it the profile? Is it the export settings? Something else we're overlooking?

Hope there's a simple explanation for it. Thanks ahead if anyone knows.
