ok - so - where we at?

you have some issues with photoshop - the FH file is not the way to go

here's some things to think about

firstly - dont panic - we'll do that for you

simplify things - is there a way to simplify the photoshop file - by this I do NOT mean flattening the whole file, but maybe merging some of the layers to dumm it down a bit - you can shift select multiple layers and select "merge selected" in the layers pallette - but think about what and why you are doing it (hopefully to make things a bit simpler!)

bleeds - can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it sometimes - there's several ways of skinning the cat here. if your image is an exact size and needs making bigger you can go image>canvas size> (select the middle square in the grid - just click on it), punch in some new dimensions (add however much bleed you want/need) and hit ok

now the canvas (page if you like) is expanded and perhaps you can use some cloning skills from college to extend the bleeds - maybe you can duplicate layers and "reflect" them and move them about to create bleed - maybe you can just fill with solid colours - cant really say wihout seeing the image, but hopefully something in this lot will help a bit.

do a save as to keep the original file though - you can screw things up, but that history pallette is a god send sometimes.

and dont panic - it is fairly logical if you think logically

and avoid that freehand file.

good luck - happy photoshopping!

ha. thanks.
I open the non FH file (the orig Psd file) and I get a message of:

"Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now?

In addition, some text layers contain fonts that are missing. These layers will need to have the missing fonts replaced before they can be used for vector based output. These layers will not be updated."

Hmm.. fonts eh.. (not supplied)
Update or not?

You'll have to get hold of them some how if you need to edit the text, otherwise the pixel info will be used and the type will probably look nasty when out put

If the FH file doesn't have font issues try quitting photoshop and then relaunch it, thus forcing it to rebuild the font menus, but yes your workaround should work

Wow. I would not want to have to work with this person or at his company. Seriously - get some Photoshop manuals and learn how to do your job. Your biggest mistake was going to college to study graphic arts. (I believe you when you say all they taught you is cloning).

No worries, you have your own job.
As for not wanting to work with me, thats unfortunate, as I could use the experienced co worker / atmosphere.

I wasnt making that up when i wrote it.
Its the only thing we learned.

Which educational courses did you take / or would you recommend ?
Most places ask for a college diploma or better.
( for the record, I agree with you )

I have a few books on the way.
Hopefully they will help.

Job wise:
I ended up using the FH file, cloning out all the crap they left in the 3 background files (some brown line resembling what once was a dieline) and for bleeds, just scaling the 3 background Images up 3%.

Photoshop Tutorials

There are a bunch of great tutorials that come with photoshop itself. I learned how to use photoshop by using the tutorials inside photoshop as well as using free photoshop tutorials on the internet. Here's a link to absolute cross: Photoshop Tutorials -- Absolute Cross

Also, check out phong: phong » tutorials [ photoshop, flash, pov-ray & polar graphing tutorials ] - His tutorials make some really neat effects.

Now for the most part, the tutorials on the internet aren't good for prepress but do get you familiar with the tools. In my book, being familiar with the tools is what photoshop is really about.
