Avatar Creation

I really have no idea where this should be posted so I'll put it here
because this is the application I use for this.

What sort of process do you folks go though to create your avatars?
What's the easiest way to get a picture into the proper size to be
posted in a forum profile? Is there a utility that does this or what?
What's the best format to save the finished product as?
My avatar workflow is too shameful to share, so any help would be
appreciated.

I seem to be hamstrung when it comes to the simple things in life

For creating Avatars, Photoshop is the way I go. Depending on how the image is created, I will save them out either as a jpeg or a gif. If it's like your current avatar, I'd leave that as a RGB jpeg since it's square and has image all the way to the edge. My current avatar is a gif file, 256 index color set with transparency on white.
All images are set to 72dpi and are sized through photoshop to fit maximum size limitations of the appropriate forum. For my current avatar it's not square so I set the width to the max size and leave the height to size in proportion.
Pretty much any CT based program like photoshop should be able to do this. If you want an animating avatar, you'll need to make it an animating GIF. This can be done through Adobe Imageready, gif builder, or other programs as such. You'll find a bunch at versiontracker.com.

I'm with Jalan,
I use Photoshop for the static images and Imageready for the animated ones.
