Using Raw Camera plug in and DNG converter for CS

I've hit a problem that I can't seem to get around, or find any relevant information on.

Trying to get the best quality images from my Nikon D70, I've been shooting in its version of raw called .NEF. The images are the best quality and I'd like to be able to shoot in it all the time.

Photoshop CS2 will open these files in its raw mode, allow me to make adjustments then save the files as tiffs with the profile I assign to them.
It's great, but with standard CS it doesn't have this plugin(or it says it does but doesn't seem to work). I have CS installed on my laptop which I'd like to take with me when I shoot these images, but I'm not even able to preview these images.

I downloaded the Adobe DNG converter (along with the latest raw camera plugin) which converts digital camera raw images to a DNG file which photoshop is supposed to be able to read, however it doesn't seem to work.
Can anyone tell me how to get around this problem, it is so easy in CS2 and that is how I'd like it to be in CS, with out installing the chunkier CS2 on my laptop.

Lies, lies.... all lies....

According to this page http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html your camera is only supported in the CS2 version of Camera Raw.

Also, according to this page http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/main.html it says DNG is only supported in CS2.

Both of these pages appear to be incorrect

You need to download the Camera Raw update for PS CS. The Nikon D70 was supported as of Camera Raw 2.2 for Photoshop CS. There's also DNG converters for download once you're at the update page. The latest version of Camera Raw for CS is 2.4. Camera Raw 3 is only for CS 2 (that's why it's listed under the CS 2 section of the Photoshop Downloads Page)

Head over to the downloads page at Adobe to pick up the updates.

If you want, there are plenty of other programs that will work with your D70 other than Photoshop and the Nikon software if you're interested.

Capture One Pro and LE
Bibble
VueScan

are three that come to mind right away.

hi, you probably solved your little problem by now.

i have a D70 too and i remember there is a little trick to open the raw files in photoshop cs1. you get the plugin, put it in, but you have to delete the plugin which was installed with photoshop.

any more questions, check this forum
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1034

it's a must for SLR users.

cheers, Dimitri
