Pagemaker resizing tif incorrectly on relink...
So, I have a customer who is still on Ragemaker and insists on not making their own PDFs. Obviously, this is a recipe for disaster as we are now setup to take the fall for any inconsistencies on their system as well as being accountable for any human error on our side.
Having said that, I have a question about this cluster**** of an issue that happened in last week's magazine.
The client's tiff file is 525.714ppi, CMYK, 2.8" x 2.1", 1472 x 1104.
They send a low res PDF for us to check by, but in that file the links are not included, which is one reason it's low res, obviously. They don't use PDF optimizer or anything like that. In their file, the placeholder image looks normal.
However, when relinking to the file, Pagemaker interprets the image as being .233" x .166" and, if untampered with resizes the image to 1014% x 1732.2% to fill the frame.
I tried resaving the tif as a new file without messing with any settings and the same result occured, but if I change the resolution to, say, 300ppi and relink the file looks fine.
Can someone give me some insight as to what is going on?

Dude
Really have to dig into those dead brain cells for this answer. Does it resize all pages or does it do just the first? We used-to add a fake first page with nothing on it, it keeps it from losing its little Aldus mind when you write to PS.
Give it a try.

This is on page 14 of the document, and it's the third image on the page...and this is pre postscript, it actually shows up wrong on the screen.

probably, but that doesn't solve my problem which is the document printed like this, and now the customer wants an explanation.

I think the explanation is that their old-ass application doesn't write proper PS for your RIP. Tell 'em to freakin' get with the times or deal with it!
Yeah, I know - not an option but hey, wouldn't that feel fantastic just to say to them?

Dude
It was named Rage-Maker for a reason. The program is 12 years out of date. For those with a pdf workflow, the stupid program written before pdf existed. I guess it's like pissing into the wind. Sorry you have to eat this one.

no insight, but we always dealt with that when we got PM files...if I recall seemed to be worse when going cross platform.

First off, what version of pagemaker and what OS?
let me see if I have this right.
point 1. Is this the file that is placed in the pagemaker file when you received it?
point 2. what is this pdf for? PDF files don't have links, unless you have an OPI PDF workflow.
point 3. Is the file that was originally placed in pagemaker the exact same size and res as the one you want to swap it out for? If not, you won't be able to just "swap" it out. Pagmaker has a history of not being the most friendly when it comes to swapping out hi-res to low-res due to the res and physical dimensions making it all funked up.
point 4. I think point 3 answers this.
If not,
please ignore my ramblings, it's time to hit the highway and go down to the patio for a margaita or two!
you probably need one by now yourself, working with ragemaker and all!
cheers,
David

Dude, I wish I could say that sometimes. Maybe you could send me a .wav file of yourself
saying it. That's about as close to the sun as I could fly unfortunately.
