Publisher 2007
Got my email notification today from Microsoft for my free Complimentary Copy of Office Publisher 2007 since I'm a valued member of the Microsoft Publisher Service Provider Program. Downloading right now. Should be interesting. Has the option to use the new Microsoft Save as PDF or Windows XPS.

I had a hell of a time getting any info out of Microsoft on the program a couple months ago (see my previous posts) but I'll be damned if I didn't get the email, too. Just in time, too. We do a lot of work for our city government, which felt justified spending my tax money on Publisher 2007 for EVERYONE! Let the amateur designs roll!

It's easier to get a usasble PDF out of Publisher 2007 with the built in (read downloadable) PDF export plug-in. It's still what ever is in Publisher but when it comes to the PDF itself it is easier to get a higher quality PDF.

They should make it easier to get into "Press Ready mode" or CMYK for those of you who don't have digital presses. I hate having to "re-learn" how to walk someone through the steps every 6 months when someone not only insists on giving PDFs made from Publisher, but "doing them right".
I would rather have the PDFs supplied RGB and fix them with Pitstop than have to walk them through a program that I am unfamiliar with to make "good" PDFs. I feel like they will get a feeling that we are not a solid prepress while we are fumbling through the menus trying to find out how to redefine colors, when IMO they should be suspicious of a prepress operator that is more comfortable in (or even recommends) Publisher.

I'm uncomfortably comfortable in Publisher (in fact, I was fixing a customer's Pub file today and remarked to a colleague that I know it a little too well these days). If you get a lot of Publisher files, you should be, too. If you keep forgetting how to make the file CMYK, then you're not "re-learning" it because you obviously never learned it in the first place. It's just another program.
While I wouldn't blindly recommend it to most folks, I would recommend it if the "designer" is going to use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint instead.

Point taken.
But, the reason I never took the time to learn publisher was for all those years that I was cutting my teeth in prepress, Publisher was a true DOG that wasn't capable of doing what was needed for a conventional press.
Also, for the price of Adobe's Creative Suite, I can't recommend Publisher even if I know that the only thing that they will ever use their layout program for is a monthly church flyer.
I didn't mean to offend anyone that actually has taken the time to become familiar with the program, and I would have myself if it was worth learning back in the day. But, unfortunately, anytime I need to do something in a layout program I reach for Quark. I always recommend InDesign to customers because they will end up buying the Creative Suite anyway to get the other programs that they will need.
It is a PDF world (in my world), so I don't really care what anyone uses as long as they can get it to me as a PDF in the end.....

Me too, except I use InDesign, avoiding Quark at all costs when possible. I don't think anyone on this board would willingly create a project in Publisher unless it was to be handed to a client to use as a template, perhaps.
