PMS in Publisher

We are Mac based and don't take any PC files.
We have a client who builds a file in Publisher and then makes a PDF for us to use.

The PDF is RGB and needs to be 2 color PMS.

Since I don't have Publisher, (I know you are all jealous) could one of you give a brief explanation that I could print out for the client on how to make PMS colors in Publisher.

It's been a while since I worked with Publisher and I'm pretty certain that it does PMS colors, but if you can't then I apologize for the stupid question. I've been hanging out with Sales people and Pressmen lately.

I think only 2000, XP and 2003 work with spot mode.

I've got a nightclass in 30 mins but i'll post some screenshots of how its done afterwards.

You'll need to find out what version they're using. Anything thats done in version pre-2003 won't support composite mode and will be RGB. They'll have to output as separations to hold the spots and you'll have to merge them. If they're using v2003, they just need to specify composite mode when making a .ps file, not rgb which I think is default. I can't be specific since I'm doing this from memory and my home computer suprisingly doesn't have Publisher.

Ok, Joe, here you go...

Publisher 2000: They will need to designate the spot colors using the Commercial
Printing tools from the menu bar under Tools. These will obviously not change
RGB jpegs into anything usable, but will change existing colors to a PMS color, and
hold screen values. They will need to print a seperated .ps file for you to print
with, and a comp for you see. If they can make PDF's out of them, great! Then
you can impose the seps, and proof to the comp. The sep and comp options are in
the initial print dialog box.

Publisher 2003: They will need to designate colors as above, but a comp PDF will
hold spot colors if made correctly to begin with. I Save As to .ps file then Distill.
Have them save or print to a Composite CMYK pdf in the Advanced Printing Options
to hold colors. Again this will not help any RGB jpeg or bmp files, or Word Art.
Advanced Printing Options are located in the Initial print dialog.

Hope this helps...

One easy fix from back in the days of spot being real hard for everyone, have them set up black as black and use straight Magenta for one spot and Cyan for the next and Yellow if there is a 3rd color. When you image plates you image CMYK and just tell the pressman to run the Magenta as PMSxxx, Cyan as PMSxxy etc...

It will look funny on screen but plates don't care what color gets put on them.

I usually direct all customers to use this method. Even Quark and ID "artists" usually can't do a proper spot color job. There is always a couple of CMYK elements that "are PMS 12389458CVCvvC on my screen" according to them.
