Crap is as crap does...the real question here is how come you're using Publisher?
I've heard of people going round the world in a Trabant, but I'd rather do it in a, well let's face it, anything else.
Do yourself a favour, try the Creative Suite, Ok it's not a 'giveaway' but it is as solid package as you could wish for today.
Trust me I'm a printer.

Eyetech,
I agree with you. Why publisher? That's one think I can't stand is when people use publisher as a layout program. I just had a 36 page book in excel. These people don't know what you have to go through to get the files to go through a rip. Bye layout programs

The Publisher file was their "supplied art"... trust me, I'd never use it if I didn't have to

Sounds like you're imposing in publisher. Personally, I d set the files up 1-up,export to pdf, impose in Indesign........and curse Bill Gates once again.
The first thing I do with pub files is distill, and get them into a the sort of format God indended for prepress.

publishite
Personally I'd rather get a fork and slip it under my kneecap and lever it off than use Publishite, leave it alone and get CS'ed up. It really is the next evolution of pre-press, here's a prime example, import what you like onto the page, be it rgb jpeg, gif, psd etc. and CMYK output just sorts it for you! Huzzah! Pooplisher can actually impose 1-ups to however you want them stepped. It's in the print dialogue box somewhere. It's also not overly user friendly but you can find out how to do it from the help menu. (What? Microsoft not making user friendly software? That's new  )
How I usually do publisher is get them into pdf. Impose from there or open the pdf in Illustrator.
At least they weren't done in MS Works. Lord save me, I get these all the time now.

Instead of telling you to get a different app here's my read on this. I also have had this happen to me, and after trying to understand what Publisher is doing I think I figured it out. If you start with a pre-designed layout "wizard" this causes strange "text links" to occur. Its like once a text box is assigned a style and text typed into it you can copy it and change the text but if you copy it again it will revert back to the original text. Try to create a new sepaprate text box and set it up to match the first, then copy paste them and see what happens.
Publishwhore is just a misunderstood backwards absolutely stupid, *$#@%%*
no good app, or sorry I was thinking of MS as a whole......
(ps, I hate IE and it's lack of spell check)
